Men jumping off landing craft into five to six feet of water. Weight of eighty pounds they were carrying instantly doubled. Men who had trained to cross 100 yards of beach in twenty seconds taking three hours in such a sodden condition, even when not under fire.

“Some took as long as three hours to cross that one-hundred yards of beach. Extreme fear caused their legs to go out from under them. They had to crawl and managed barely that.”
