Terrible News: Yer Ol’ Woodpile Report’s Proprietor Has Shut It Down!

This guy, “‘Ol Remus,” has maintained a wonderful Website for 11 years, but I just checked on it today for the first time in at least six months, and though he posted his last entry at some point during the last two days (there’s a reference to a May 24 news story), at the top he announces, “WOODPILE REPORT IS DISCONTINUED.”

In case you’re wondering, and I’m sure you are, there is no archive at the site, though you might be able to find one at the Wayback Machine.

I’ve been doing housekeeping with my blogroll. Quite a few folks have either stopped blogging, or let old blogs just be taken over. Some others, including White Victims of Black Crime, appears to have been censored.

Well, I feel no need to maintain a long blog roll, because the defunct sites blind readers to good ones that are still in business, and popular sites have no need for hits from me unless, that is, they want to swap links.

Most cultures exhibit a particular configuration or style. A single value or pattern of perceiving the world often leaves its stamp on several institutions in the society. Examples are "machismo" in Spanish-influenced cultures, "face" in Japanese culture, and "pollution by females" in some highland New Guinea cultures. Here Horace Miner demonstrates that "attitudes about the body" have a pervasive influence on many institutions in Nacireman society.

The anthropologist has become so familiar with the diversity of ways in which different peoples behave in similar situations that he is not apt to be surprised by even the most exotic customs. In fact, if all of the logically possible combinations of behavior have not been found somewhere in the world, he is apt to suspect that they must be present in some yet undescribed tribe. This point has, in fact, been expressed with respect to clan organization by Murdock. In this light, the magical beliefs and practices of the Nacirema present such unusual aspects that it seems desirable to describe them as an example of the extremes to which human behavior can go.

Professor Linton first brought the ritual of the Nacirema to the attention of anthropologists twenty years ago, but the culture of this people is still very poorly understood. They are a North American group living in the territory between the Canadian Creel the Yaqui and Tarahumare of Mexico, and the Carib and Arawak of the Antilles. Little is known of their origin, although tradition states that they came from the east....

Nacirema culture is characterized by a highly developed market economy which has evolved in a rich natural habitat. While much of the people's time is devoted to economic pursuits, a large part of the fruits of these labors and a considerable portion of the day are spent in ritual activity. The focus of this activity is the human body, the appearance and health of which loom as a dominant concern in the ethos of the people. While such a concern is certainly not unusual, its ceremonial aspects and associated philosophy are unique.

The fundamental belief underlying the whole system appears to be that the human body is ugly and that its natural tendency is to debility and disease. Incarcerated in such a body, man's only hope is to avert these characteristics through the use of the powerful influences of ritual and ceremony. Every household has one or more shrines devoted to this purpose. The more powerful individuals in the society have several shrines in their houses and, in fact, the opulence of a house is often referred to in terms of the number of such ritual centers it possesses. Most houses are of wattle and daub construction, but the shrine rooms of the more wealthy are walled with stone. Poorer families imitate the rich by applying pottery plaques to their shrine walls. While each family has at least one such shrine, the rituals associated with it are not family ceremonies but are private and secret. The rites are normally only discussed with children, and then only during the period when they are being initiated into these mysteries. I was able, however, to establish sufficient rapport with the natives to examine these shrines and to have the rituals described to me.

The focal point of the shrine is a box or chest which is built into the wall. In this chest are kept the many charms and magical potions without which no native believes he could live. These preparations are secured from a variety of specialized practitioners. The most powerful of these are the medicine men, whose assistance must be rewarded with substantial gifts. However, the medicine men do not provide the curative potions for their clients, but decide what the ingredients should be and then write them down in an ancient and secret language. This writing is understood only by the medicine men and by the herbalists who, for another gift, provide the required charm.

The charm is not disposed of after it has served its purpose, but is placed in the charmbox of the household shrine. As these magical materials are specific for certain ills, and the real or imagined maladies of the people are many, the charm-box is usually full to overflowing. The magical packets are so numerous that people forget what their purposes were and fear to use them again. While the natives are very vague on this point, we can only assume that the idea in retaining all the old magical materials is that their presence in the charm-box, before which the body rituals are conducted, will in some way protect the worshipper.

Beneath the charm-box is a small font. Each day every member of the family, in succession, enters the shrine room, bows his head before the charm-box, mingles different sorts of holy water in the font, and proceeds with a brief rite of ablution. The holy waters are secured from the Water Temple of the community, where the priests conduct elaborate ceremonies to make the liquid ritually pure.

In the hierarchy of magical practitioners, and below the medicine men in prestige, are specialists whose designation is best translated "holy-mouth-men." The Nacirema have an almost pathological horror of and fascination with the mouth, the condition of which is believed to have a supernatural influence on all social relationships. Were it not for the rituals of the mouth, they believe that their teeth would fall out, their gums bleed, their jaws shrink, their friends desert them, and their lovers reject them. They also believe that a strong relationship exists between oral and moral characteristics. For example, there is a ritual ablution of the mouth for children which is supposed to improve their moral fiber.

The daily body ritual performed by everyone includes a mouth-rite. Despite the fact that these people are so punctilious about care of the mouth, this rite involves a practice which strikes the uninitiated stranger as revolting. It was reported to me that the ritual consists of inserting a small bundle of hog hairs into the mouth, along with certain magical powders, and then moving the bundle in a highly formalized series of gestures.

In addition to the private mouth-rite, the people seek out a holy-mouth-man once or twice a year. These practitioners have an impressive set of paraphernalia, consisting of a variety of augers, awls, probes, and prods. The use of these objects in the exorcism of the evils of the mouth involves almost unbelievable ritual torture of the client. The holy-mouth-man open the client’s mouth and, using the above mentioned tools, enlarges any holes which decay may have created in the teeth. Magical materials are put into these holes. If there age no naturally occurring holes in the teeth, large sections of one or more teeth are gouged out so that the supernatural substance can be applied. In the client's view, the purpose of these ministrations is to arrest decay and to draw friends. The extremely sacred and traditional character of the rite is evident in the fact that the natives return to the holy-mouth-men year after year, despite the fact that their teeth continue to decay.

It is to be hoped that, when a thorough study of the Nacirema is made, there will be careful inquiry into the personality structure of these people. One has but to watch the gleam in the eye of a holy-mouth-man, as he jabs an awl into an exposed nerve, to suspect that a certain amount of sadism is involved. If this can be established, a very interesting pattern emerges, for most of the population shows definite masochistic tendencies. It was to these that Professor Linton referred in discussing a distinctive part of the daily body ritual which is performed only by men. This part of the rite involves scraping and lacerating the surface of the face with a sharp instrument. Special women's rites are performed only four times during each lunar month, but what they lack in frequency is made up in barbarity. As part of this ceremony, women bake their heads in small ovens for about an hour. The theoretically interesting point is that what seems to be a preponderantly masochistic people have developed sadistic specialists.

The medicine men have an imposing temple, or latipso, in every community of any size. The more elaborate ceremonies required to treat very sick patients can only be performed at this temple. These ceremonies involve not only the thaumaturge but a permanent group of vestal maidens who move sedately about the temple chambers in distinctive costume and head-dress.

The latipso ceremonies are so harsh that it is phenomenal that a fair proportion of the really sick natives who enter the temple ever recover. Small children whose indoctrination is still incomplete have been known to resist attempts to take them to the temple because "that is where you go to die." Despite this fact, sick adults are not only willing but eager to undergo the protracted ritual purification, if they can afford to do so. No matter how ill the supplicant or how grave the emergency, the guardians of many temples will not admit a client if he cannot give a rich gift to the custodian. Even after one has gained admission and survived the ceremonies, the guardians will not permit the neophyte to leave until he makes still another gift.

The supplicant entering the temple is first stripped of all his or her clothes. In everyday life the Nacirema avoids exposure of his body and its natural functions. Bathing and excretory acts are performed only in the secrecy of the household shrine, where they are ritualized as part of the body-rites. Psychological shock results from the fact that body secrecy is suddenly lost upon entry into the latipso. A man, whose own wife has never seen him in an excretory act, suddenly finds himself naked and assisted by a vestal maiden while he performs his natural functions into a sacred vessel. This sort of ceremonial treatment is necessitated by the fact that the excreta are used by a diviner to ascertain the course and nature of the client's sickness. Female clients, on the other hand, find their naked bodies are subjected to the scrutiny, manipulation and prodding of the medicine men.

Few supplicants in the temple are well enough to do anything but lie on their hard beds. The daily ceremonies, like the rites of the holy-mouth-men, involve discomfort and torture. With ritual precision, the vestals awaken their miserable charges each dawn and roll them about on their beds of pain while performing ablutions, in the formal movements of which the maidens are highly trained. At other times they insert magic wands in the supplicant's mouth or force him to eat substances which are supposed to be healing. From time to time the medicine men come to their clients and jab magically treated needles into their flesh. The fact that these temple ceremonies may not cure, and may even kill the neophyte, in no way decreases the people's faith in the medicine men.

There remains one other kind of practitioner, known as a "listener." This witchdoctor has the power to exorcise the devils that lodge in the heads of people who have been bewitched. The Nacirema believe that parents bewitch their own children. Mothers are particularly suspected of putting a curse on children while teaching them the secret body rituals. The counter-magic of the witchdoctor is unusual in its lack of ritual. The patient simply tells the "listener" all his troubles and fears, beginning with the earliest difficulties he can remember. The memory displayed by the Nacirema in these exorcism sessions is truly remarkable. It is not uncommon for the patient to bemoan the rejection he felt upon being weaned as a babe, and a few individuals even see their troubles going back to the traumatic effects of their own birth.

In conclusion, mention must be made of certain practices which have their base in native esthetics but which depend upon the pervasive aversion to the natural body and its functions. There are ritual fasts to make fat people thin and ceremonial feasts to make thin people fat. Still other rites are used to make women's breasts larger if they are small, and smaller if they are large. General dissatisfaction with breast shape is symbolized in the fact that the ideal form is virtually outside the range of human variation. A few women afflicted with almost inhuman hyper-mammary development are so idolized that they make a handsome living by simply going from village to village and permitting the natives to stare at them for a fee.

Reference has already been made to the fact that excretory functions are ritualized, routinized, and relegated to secrecy. Natural reproductive functions are similarly distorted. Intercourse is taboo as a topic and scheduled as an act. Efforts are made to avoid pregnancy by the use of magical materials or by limiting intercourse to certain phases of the moon. Conception is actually very infrequent. When pregnant, women dress so as to hide their condition. Parturition takes place in secret, without friends or relatives to assist, and the majority of women do not nurse their infants.

Our review of the ritual life of the Nacirema has certainly shown them to be a magic-ridden people. It is hard to understand how they have managed to exist so long under the burdens which they have imposed upon themselves. But even such exotic customs as these take on real meaning when they are viewed with the insight provided by Malinowski when he wrote:

"Looking from far and above, from our high places of safety in the developed civilization, it is easy to see all the crudity and irrelevance of magic. But without its power and guidance early man could not have mastered his practical difficulties as he has done, nor could man have advanced to the higher stages of civilization."

What the MSM Don’t Want You to Know About the Murderer of Reporter Charnice Milton

Not only did the media not want to describe Milton’s killer (not to be confused with a “suspect”), but black DC Detective Det. (Jenelle?) Howard didn’t want to, either. Chief Cathy Lanier had to bend over and tell her to give the description. And while Det. Howard asked the public to call her with information, she never gave out a telephone number. Granted, she was nervous, but she still didn’t seem anxious to do her job.

Meanwhile, the media have refused to report on the perp’s full description. This censorship is due to black “journalists,” like the vic, and their racially segregated organization, the National Association of Black Journalists.

Chief Lanier was plenty disturbing, as well.

She said the vic was in the “wrong place, wrong time,” and was “certainly not the intended victim.”

No one should ever speak of a crime victim as having been in the “wrong place at the wrong time.” That suggests that what happened wasn’t a crime. Such speech should be limited to victims of freak accidents and natural catastrophes, which are not crimes.

Charnice Milton was murdered. She was in the right place at the right time—transferring from one bus to another, on her way home from work.

Chief Lanier emphasized that Milton was “certainly not the intended victim,” and then had to waffle, since that wasn’t helpful. Besides which, Milton was the intended victim—not of the first killer, but of the second. The shooter intended to kill the second gang-banger, but the latter grabbed Charnice Milton, fully intending for her to get shot in his stead. Which she was.

Chief Lanier also called the crime “random,” which it most certainly was not. One felon attempted to murder another felon, who grabbed Charnice Milton, and used her as a human shield. That means there were two murderers, and Chief Lanier should have decried the heinous nature of the crime, rather than indulging in pc clichés. Nowhere did I hear her vilify Milton’s killers. Lanier talked like a black woman, rather than a lawman, and that, too, was no accident.

The “human shield” aspect is a throwback to the 1980s. During the crack wars, drug slingers in New York City routinely grabbed little children, and even babies, using them as human shields in turf wars, and a number of those children and babies were shot.

I’m not suggesting that America’s cities are in danger of sliding back to the bad old days of the crack wars; they’ve long been back there. I don’t know when the slide began, because urban police have been using Fakestats since at least the mid-1990s.

When violent crime was supposedly at its lowest, in cities like New York, the authorities assured us that crime was at its lowest ebb since 1964. Back in 1964, however, New York City residents considered the conditions to be Hell on Earth, and were fleeing the city.

Whenever it was things slid back, we’ve been there since at least the night of November 4, 2008.

Not everyone behaved themselves when celebrating U.S. President-elect Barack Obama’s historic win Tuesday night [November 4].

Some fired gunshots, a felon accused cops of arresting him “because a black man won for president” and a teenager standing with throngs of passionate revelers used the opportunity to slap a police officer, Cook County prosecutors said.

“White bitches. F— McCain. You white police can’t do nothing,” 19-year-old Celita Hart taunted officers as she stood with a throng of Obama supporters in the 6900 block of South Western Avenue, Assistant State’s Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said in a court Wednesday. At some point, authorities said, Hart left the crowd, which had been chanting “Obama, Obama,” walked up to a squad car, and smacked a male officer in the face.

Hart was one of a half-dozen charged in Election Night-related arrests. A slew of others facing weapon and reckless discharge violations appeared in central bond court.

None of the incidents occurred in Grant Park, where Obama addressed a giddy crowd of 240,000 late Tuesday.

West Sider Narada Thomas, 23, told police he shot a .22-caliber revolver in the air to “celebrate Obama becoming president,” Scaduto said. And 37-year-old Andre Murph, of Aurora, shot a 9mm into the ground several times in the 700 block of West 60th Place to express his joy, Scaduto said.

“It was an exciting night,” Murph’s attorney James E. Thompson shrugged before Judge Israel Desierto.

While Kenneth Smith, a 24-year- old felon, never stated why he fired three rounds at his residence, in the 6700 block of South Ada Street, he complained that officers only arrested him “because a black man won for president,” Scaduto said.

Peer pressure seemed to get the better of 54-year-old Joseph Morgan, who allegedly was caught holding a .22-caliber gun in the air on his back porch in the 5700 block of South Lowe Avenue.

His excuse, according to prosecutors?

“Everybody else is shooting their guns, I figured, ‘Why not?’ ”

I Stumped Google! World’s Biggest Search Engine Had No Mention of 1970s’ Vic Damone Record

I’m in a 1970s time warp. Last weekend, my chief of research and I watched The Godfather (1972), and today I’m musing about the New York radio station, WNEW-AM, that I listened to from the early 1970s until its demise in 1992.


During the mid-1970s, I used to frequently hear the following song on ‘NEW. It was sung by Vic Damone, and probably played by disk jockey Julius LaRosa, a fellow paisan who had also been professional singer. (LaRosa, by the way, is also still around, and is due to turn 85 on June 2.)

The song is an exercise in narcissism, possibly a spin-off of “My Way,” but Damone did an excellent job with it. When he was younger, he’d had a stunning voice, considered the best in the business, and had had any number of hits, but at the time, WNEW-AM didn’t play that material, so I always wondered what the big deal was about Vic Damone’s voice. In fact, it was only this evening, when I hunted down Damone’s personal Web site, in search of this song, that I got to hear samples of the young Damone, in all his splendor.

Vic Damone retired from performing in 2001, following a stroke the previous year, but is still around, and will turn 87 on June 12.

I haven’t heard the song in 40 years, so I’m sure I’ve forgotten some of the lyrics, and can’t vouch for the order of the stanzas.

Supremes reject Vanessa Coleman’s appeal bid

The Tennessee Supreme Court is saying no way, no how to a bid by Vanessa Coleman to convince the high court to review her case.

Coleman was the lone female charged in the January 2007 torture slayings of Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23. The other three defendants – her boyfriend, his pal and his brother – will never walk out of prison alive.

[That’s almost certainly not true. “Ringleader” Lemaricus Davidson has been sentenced to die, but the chances of that coming to pass are slim and none. And anyone who doesn’t get it, is a candidate for parole. Davidson’s half-brother Letalvis Cobbins was sentenced to life without parole, plus blah-blah-blah. Here at WEJB/NSU, we refer to “life without parole” as “life until parole.” Cobbins is now only about 30, and is likely to be paroled sometime in the next 20 years. If the dictator calling himself “Barack Obama” has his way, Cobbins will be freed, along with a million or so violent, colored criminals in a year or two. “His pal” refers to George Thomas who, according to Coleman’s police interrogation, shot and killed Christopher Newsom with Davidson and Eric Boyd, each of whom fired one shot into Newsom.

I covered Thomas’ May, 2013 retrial for VDARE, at which he was re-convicted, and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole. Officially, he could get out in 43 years. In reality, look for him to be out in 20 years or less.]

Coleman, on the other hand, is serving a 35-year sentence. She’s already been up for parole, though her request was denied. [She’ll be released in a few years, though she should’ve gotten the death penalty.]

Last year, the state Court of Criminal Appeals cast off various legal challenges to her convictions on lesser charges in the horrific crimes. Most were pretty lame, especially when one considers a jury cut her a humongous break despite her callous journal entry calling her time inside the little shop of Chipman Street horrors as “one hell of an adventure.”

N.S.: Over the past 50 years, America’s leading social BS artists, alleged journalists, and media and political leaders have together woven a racial fairy tale, which they have used to suffocate white America: The blood libel, whereby whites are responsible for all (never mind any) of the pathologies that dominate cities with large black populations, and especially those cities dominated by blacks.

Note the damned if you do, damned if you don’t logic that is typical of “civil rights” (black supremacist) thinking: Whites were racist, for keeping blacks out of their neighborhoods, but since white racism is at fault for everything bad that blacks do (read: everything bad that befalls blacks, since blacks only do good), and the blacks defaulted on their mortgages, whites were also racist for letting them in. (Hmm. Where have I heard that?)

This item is part four of an award-winning, eight-part series, “Broken Detroit,” by alleged reporter Cameron McWhirter, all apparently published in one Sunday edition of the Detroit News, on June 17, 2001.

I had downloaded the entire series in 2008, and a good thing, too, since not only has The Detroit News sent it down the memory hole, but you can’t even find it via the newspaper’s online archive. I guess it has served its purpose. That’s yet another refutation of the myth that on the Internet, everything is forever. (I found it on an old backup drive last year, and just re-found it today.)

I just found the series again, on that ancient hard drive, only unlike last year, when I was able to recover the first four parts, including the photographs, I was only able to open this part with WordPad, and thus was only able to get the text.

Note that Cameron McWhirter asks Jewish former residents if their parents used any racist language to describe the neighborhood’s integration, but doesn’t appear to have asked blacks the same question. Likewise, he asks a black why the Jews wanted to move out, but doesn’t ask the black why his family wanted to move in.

McWhirter presents whites’ behavior as completely irrational, as if they had nothing to fear from blacks.

And if the only problem in blacks’ lives is whites, as lefties are always telling us, why didn’t blacks’ lives and the neighborhoods’ appearances improve, once they took over neighborhoods like Detroit’s Elmhurst?

And why would blacks buy houses they couldn’t afford? When a potential purchaser considers buying a house, he has to figure out how much he can put down, and how much he can afford in monthly mortgage and property tax payments, and act accordingly.

McWhirter also says nothing about black crime. In fact, throughout the series, he acts as if blacks were every bit as law-abiding, hard-working, and non-violent as the whites they ran off. He weaves a racial fairy tale.

Thomas Sugrue, a University of Pennsylvania professor, documents this in his award-winning book, The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit. He shows that real-estate agents had the most to gain financially from whites deserting a city block.

Agents often bought the houses for less than market value, then sold them to blacks at a profit. [Is he saying that the agents sold to whites at a loss?] Sometimes, they provided financing, making more money on the mortgage. [Whoever provides financing is bound to make a profit, no?] If the new black family couldn’t meet the mortgage payments, the real-estate agent would simply call in the loan, have the sheriff seize the house, and then sell it again, earning even more profits. [And if a white family is delinquent in its mortgage payments, the same thing happens. Why does McWhirter act as if this is some conspiracy uniquely directed at blacks? Why does he not presume that black homeowners must carry out the same fundamental duties as white homeowners?]

In 1954, Shiovitz’s former house at 1956 Elmhurst was sold at the Sheriff’s sale for $849.32 to a Joel W. Josephson, who turned the house into a rental. Starting in 1954, through at least eight owners following Josephson, Tim Lewis, a black carpenter, lived in the house with his family. Lewis bought the house in 1970. Lewis had moved up from Arkansas after the war, like hundreds of thousands of other blacks looking for work.

His son, Curtis Lewis, lives in the house today. He said he remembers the lush trees and the quiet street. Most of the Jews had moved off the block, he recalls.

Why did they move? Lewis shrugged.

“Maybe they wanted to be bettering themselves,” he said. “Maybe too many blacks was moving in.”

The blacks who moved onto Elmhurst in the 1950s were generally poorer than the Jews who had left, but not by much. They were mostly working-class: factory workers, tradesmen, shop workers. They brought large families. On Sundays, they went to church and had cookouts. On weekdays, they went to work.

Those who were children on the block at the time remain baffled by the complex interplay of racial fear and economic incentive that led whites to leave Elmhurst.

Rita Vanerian Jury, who now lives in Birmingham, was only four in 1954 when her Armenian immigrant father decided to move the family off the street. She still doesn’t know exactly why they moved.


The new house was actually smaller.

She has only good memories of Elmhurst: walks with her father down to the corner store for ice cream; games with kids of all races in the open lots; and the beautiful flowing elms standing watch above the street and its inhabitants. She simply isn’t sure why they moved. “We were just kind of going in the same direction as the others,” she said.

Phyllis Shiovitz Weeks, now a school librarian living in Southfield, said she never heard her parents utter any racist words, nor as a girl did she ever consider race as a reason they moved away.

But now that she looks back on it, she said the predominant mood of older Jews on Elmhurst was worry and anxiety.

“It’s so complex,” she said, thinking about the move 50 years later. Racial differences were never mentioned in my house . . . but I think people find it hard to not be influenced by a natural fear of the unknown.”

[Bull. There was nothing “complex” about it, and there was nothing “unknown,” either. People knew exactly what was coming. "Shvartzes!"]

What happened on Elmhurst was repeated thousands of times, block by block, across the city and into the suburbs: whites “moving up” and away from blacks.

[The whites didn’t “move up”; they often lost everything.]

Most of the whites leaving Elmhurst didn’t move to the suburbs. They moved first to northwest Detroit. Later, they would leave the city altogether.

“A lot of black people were moving in. ... At that point there was this turmoil beginning,” Shiovitz, now 82, said sitting in his Southfield home. “If I look back ... I didn’t have the sense at that point, you could see all of this was brewing. Eventually something had to come about. The biggest thing was you would see all these people moving out.”

[The “turmoil” was racist black violence.]

All these years later, Shiovitz still remembers the work that he did on his house. He built an archway from the kitchen to the dining room. He fixed the porch. He put in a new sink cabinet. He replaced rotting wood under the house. He put new tiling in the kitchen.

“When I left that house, it was all in good shape, he said. There was nothing more I could do.

TV actors, at least in the old days when they were placed in a separate class from movie actors, often seemed to be clones of their movie brethren. Some were singular in their associations. Nehemiah Persoff seemed to be the Edward G. Robinson of television, getting similar roles and acting them in a very similar manner. Carolyn Jones was the Bette Davis of TV, even to the point of playing a set of sisters, one of whom is a murderer, on Burke's Law.

Others had company in their pursuits. The western stars were all either John Wayne or Gary Cooper, with an occasional Jimmy Stewart or Henry Fonda thrown in (including the real thing on The Deputy). There was a whole selection of Clark Gables, including John Russell, Rory Calhoun, Richard Egan, Robert Lowery and others. There were plenty of Brandos, including Burt Reynolds, George Maharis, and John Saxon. There were enough Rock Hudsons to fill a theater, with John Gavin, Tom Tryon, and Gardner McKay coming immediately to mind. The blonde versions I call the “Redfords,” a group of thoughtful, well-educated types, of whom Robert Redford was one, along with James Franciscus, Richard Chamberlain, and William Shatner. They had varying degrees of success, with Redford emerging at the head of the class.

Perhaps the most successful strain, however, were the Cary Grants. Grant made an ideal model for the suave detective-hero, able to be charming or tough, as the occasion demanded. Craig Stevens was hired to play Peter Gunn specifically because of a strong resemblance to Grant. His tightlipped performance was not really very charming, but it's surely how Cary would have played that character. Lantern-jawed John Vivyan played a role that Grant had actually essayed in the movies, Mr. Lucky. He was competent, at best. The heroes of the Warner Brothers detective shows were largely based on Cary Grant. Efrem Zimbalist Jr.'s Stu Bailey was a Grant-style role with a lot more charm than Peter Gunn. Richard Long's Rex Randolph, on Bourbon Street Beat, was much the same. Anthony Eisley's Tracy Steele was a less convincing version of the same character on Hawaiian Eye.

But the best of the Grant clones was Gene Barry. He was male-model handsome, had good breeding, and a seductive whiskey voice. He was also one of TV's greatest reactors. He had a series of comic takes that was perfect for Amos Burke, who had to confront an unending series of eccentric subjects. Yet he could turn around and romance the ladies, or get tough with the tough guys. And he was a good enough actor to hold up his end, when the heavy dramatics intervened.

One wonders what the originals of these clones must have thought, as they watched the boob tube in its infancy.

I just stumbled onto this guy. I have no idea who he is, or if he’s even still alive. He’s a brilliant writer and student of late 1950s and early 1960s TV detective shows who reminds me a lot of Stephen Bowie, of The Classic TV History Blog, whom I also stumbled onto a week or two ago, except that schappe1 was very sloppy, which caused me a lot of editorial work.

This was one of four detective shows from Warner Brothers, four of a couple dozen series they did for ABC (that MADE that network), from the mid-50s to the early 60s, under the stewardship of William Orr, and with the creative genius of Roy Huggins (who later came up with the best show of all time, The Fugitive).

Huggins had fancied himself a detective writer in the 40s, and came up with Stuart Bailey, an Ivy Leaguer with a background in World War II intelligence, who set up his own detective agency in Los Angeles. When Huggins became a story editor for Warner’s, it was decided to create a show around the Bailey character, 77 Sunset Strip, which debuted in 1958. They gave Bailey a partner, Jeff Spencer, and created the character of Kookie, the parking lot attendant, for comic relief. It set the stage for the other three, similar shows, each with a pair (or three) handsome detectives operating in glamorous or exotic locations. Warner's learned you needed a pretty girl involved, and the comic relief. They also learned from Peter Gunn that a musical interlude would occasionally be welcome.

Bourbon Street Beat, set in New Orleans, debuted in 1959. So did Hawaiian Eye, from Honolulu, and in 1960 came Surfside Six, from Miami Beach. Each had a catchy theme tune from [Hal David’s brother] Mack David and Jerry Livingstone. The plots were not very inspired but serviceable—they serviced many episodes, being frequently reused. Sometimes, Warner's would do versions of novels they owned the rights to, or TV remakes of some of their classic movies of the past, such as Strangers on a Train, or Dial M for Murder, in the guise of episodes of these shows. Characters from one show would show up on another, either in crossover episodes, or full-scale transfers of characters to be new members of the casts. This was easy, because the shows were not shot on location: It was all done in L.A.

The real difference in the shows were the cast members themselves. 77 Sunset Strip had the charming and talented Efrem Zimbalist Jr. and Roger Smith. It also had the "Fonzie" of the 50s, Edd Byrnes. But it lacked a significant female regular or the musical interludes.

Bourbon Street Beat had the charming and talented Richard Long, who took his charm and talent to Sunset Strip, after BSB folded in 1960. It also had craggy character actor Andrew Duggan, young pretty boy Van Williams, and Arlene Howell, a slightly ditzy Southern belle. No one here was musically inclined but a jazz combo did a turn, from time to time.

Hawaiian Eye had it all. Anthony Eisley was a competent but slightly boring lead. Young Robert Conrad had the most charisma of any of them. Connie Stevens was a cute songbird who belted out the classic Tin Pan Alley and show tunes. Poncie Ponce was a ukulele-strumming cab driver who knew every place and everyone, or had a cousin who did.

Surfside Six was maybe the weakest entry. Lee Patterson had some presence and acting ability but Van Williams, (over from BSB) and Troy Donahue were attractive but talent-challenged. Marguerite Sierra was a clichéd Latin Spitfire songstress (who, unfortunately, died young of a heart ailment). Diane McBain was attractive window-dressing.

The other main difference was the setting. 77 Sunset Strip was about glamorous people up to no good, or international intrigue, and Stu Bailey traveled a lot more than these other guys did. Hawaiian Eye was exotic—perhaps a little too much so, with an occasional embarrassing story about witch doctors and voodoo-type curses, and such. Natives were played by guys from Jersey and Chicago in the grand tradition. Surfside Six had a beach boy look to it. Bourbon Street Beat was darker and more mysterious. New Orleans at that time was not a tourist trap but a relic of the Old South, in which Miss Havisham's cake might have seemed at home.

But they were all pretty solid entertainment. If you liked one, I'm sure you'd like them all—if you could find them. They are all in black and white, so cable stations are loathe to show them. It seems that the moment a younger audience sees those monotones, they turn the station. It's too bad. They don't know what they're missing.

Dave Grusin’s Jazzy Theme Music to The Name of the Game

I used to love watching this show (1968-1971), which starred Robert Stack, Gene Barry, and Tony Franciosa, respectively, on a revolving basis. Franciosa was by far my favorite. His reporter character was named “Jeff Dillon,” which made no sense, considering Franciosa was obviously a paisan.

The characters all put out a slick, hugely popular magazine published by Howard Enterprises. Gene Barry played Glenn Howard.

Unfortunately, the intensity that drew me to Franciosa’s character also repelled his colleagues and bosses, and he got fired after the show’s second season. This was apparently a running theme in his life, and destroyed his acting career. Later on, he is supposed to have rued that he was too successful too young, but he was neither that young, nor that successful. He was just a jackass. It’s a shame, because he was quite a talent.

I probably got much of the foregoing from, so consider the source.

The episodes ran 90 minutes, had excellent scripts, lavish production values, and big-name guest stars. The pilot was called Fame is the Name of the Game.

Over 40 years after the fact, I vaguely recall episodes guest starring Van Johnson, Sammy Davis Jr., and William Shatner, respectively. The guest protagonist would be a hugely popular figure, whose heretofore artfully hidden (from the public, that is) dark side would come out, in the course of being profiled by the magazine. In the Shatner episode, all I can recall is that he played an inspirational football coach. The Van Johnson character was a corrupt, glad-handing, Irish trucker union boss (inspired by Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa), who would do anything to keep his old friend Robert Stack from publishing the truth about him, including murdering him, and incinerating his corpse, in a huge, gasoline-borne fire. Sammy Davis Jr. played a performer who always showed the world a smile, but was secretly a drug addict. Johnson was great, but the Davis role sounds the most intriguing, because he really did battle drug addiction for years.

Web commenters have claimed that the magazine in Game was based on People, but that’s impossible, because People was only founded in 1974, three years after the show was cancelled. If anything, the TV show inspired the magazine.

The show was reportedly cancelled because it was too expensive. It was produced by Universal, which was the king of TV production, because the old horror junk studio jumped into TV production first, and was the forerunner to the revolving format Universal-NBC Sunday Mystery Movie of Columbo, McCloud, McMillian & Wife and Hec Ramsey.

The show’s secret weapon was Susan St. James, the only performer who was in every episode, as ditsy secretary Peggy.

Yes, Diversity Is About Getting Rid Of White People (And That’s A Good Thing)

One of the more common memes that I’ve seen white supremacists spread around recently has been “diversity is a code word for white genocide”. The concept here is that diversity is only promoted in white nations, and that the end goal is to eliminate white people altogether by flooding all white countries with non-white people until there are no white people left. Well, guess what, white supremacists?

That’s exactly right. Diversity IS about getting rid of white people, and that’s a good thing.

First off, I am a white person myself, so allow me to get that out of the way. I’m extremely glad that the white race is dying, and you should be too. White people do not have a right to exist. Period. That may sound like a bold statement, but it’s entirely true. Any white person with even the faintest knowledge of history should curse themselves every single day for being white. Throughout all of recorded history, whites have engaged in oppression, genocide, colonialism, imperialism, and just plain evil on a massive scale. White people have denied every other race the right to exist, and have – at some point in history – oppressed every single race on the planet.

Why, then, should whites now be allowed to live in peace when whites have historically been the world’s #1 source of conflict and oppression? Whiteness is racism. Period. Whiteness is the source of all oppression in the world. Whiteness is racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and heteropatriarchal capitalism. Eliminate whiteness and you eliminate every single form of oppression that the world currently faces. No white people means no oppression. White people are like a cancer and oppression is a symptom of the cancer. Cut out the cancer altogether – with the cancer being white people – and you get rid of all of the oppression which white people cause.

I have dedicated my life to fighting racism, and I have determined – based on all available evidence – that the only way to really eliminate racism is to eliminate whiteness. Whiteness is the ocean from which racism flows. Get rid of whiteness and you get rid of racism. Despite what white supremacists often claim, white people do not have a “culture”. White “culture” consists of nothing more than oppression, genocide, and the disenfranchisement of minorities. White “culture” is racism and nothing more. When white supremacists talk about “white culture”, what they’re really talking about is racism. Over the course of history, white people have built a massive empire based entirely on the hard work of oppressed and disenfranchised minority groups. But guess what, white people? That empire is finally coming to an end now, and its demise is music to my hears. To quote the great anti-racist activist Tim Wise: “ Do you hear it? The sound of your empire dying? Your nation, as you knew it, ending, permanently? Because I do, and the sound of its demise is beautiful.”

Descendants of Holocaust survivors can personally attest to the evil that white people are capable of when they hold the reins of power. Thankfully, whites won’t be holding the reins of power for much longer. When white people die out, so will racism, sexism, queerphobia, and all other forms of oppression. The only way to eliminate racism, white privilege, and white supremacy is to eliminate whiteness altogether. When I teach my students about human rights, critical race theory, and the role of whites in worldwide oppression, my white students often ask me how they can “atone” for the evils of whiteness and how they can make up for centuries of white oppression. And I tell them: you can do that by not having any children and ensuring that the white race does not live to oppress anyone ever again in the future.

Thankfully, white birthrates are indeed very low, while the birthrates of minorities are much, MUCH higher. Within our lifetimes, whites will be a minority in a significant number of formerly white countries, including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, to name just a few. To white supremacists yearning for the days when whites could rape and pillage the world with impunity, this is incredibly frightening. To people on the right side of history, however, this looks like progress. Whites are finally getting their just desserts – and it’s about time. I sincerely hope that, when the white power structure finally comes crashing down, whites will receive no mercy from the minority groups that whites have spent centuries oppressing. We certainly don’t deserve any mercy or kindness, as we have given nothing of the sort to others.

Whites should also know that, when they do become a minority in formerly white countries, they will NOT be receiving affirmative action or any of the other benefits meant to assist the minorities that whites have historically oppressed. Why? Because whites don’t deserve those benefits. It’s as simple as that. One can look to South Africa, where whites are only about 8.4% of the population, but blacks continue to receive affirmative action because blacks in South Africa have historically been disenfranchised by whites. The same thing will happen when whites become a minority in North America, Europe, and Oceania, because whites have historically oppressed minorities in all three of those continents. Not to mention, why should whites receive any kind of benefits when the ultimate goal is to get rid of whites altogether? Finally, laws against hate speech will serve to prevent whites from complaining about this, as any white person who complains will be arrested, given a long prison sentence, and made an example of for the rest of the remaining white population. Speech that attempts to justify the white power structure and perpetuate white oppression of minorities is not freedom of speech, and it has absolutely no place in modern society.

As white people, we all need to recognize that we no longer have a place in the world. This world now belongs to the minorities that us whites have spent centuries oppressing, and there is absolutely nothing that any pathetic white supremacists can do about it. In order for a better world to be created, white people need to be exterminated. Period. It’s as simple as that. We should simply be thankful that our death will be accomplished through mass immigration and declining birthrates. When whites have exterminated other races, it wasn’t nearly so peaceful – it was done through violent genocide. But other races are not as evil as whites are, and it’s important to remember that. The world belongs to minorities now, and they will make a much better, more peaceful world with what they’re given. Only when white people have ceased to exist will a peaceful and progressive society – free of racism and hatred – be possible. The only way to eliminate white privilege, white oppression, white racism, and the oppressive white power structure is to eliminate white people altogether.

So, yes, white supremacists: diversity is indeed white genocide. And white genocide is exactly what the world needs more than anything else.

A federal appeals court dealt President Obama a defeat on Tuesday as it declined to lift a judge’s order blocking his sweeping executive action on immigration.

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals sided with a Texas judge who issued an injunction preventing the programs from going into effect. The appeals judges ruled 2-1 that the order must stay in place.

“Because the government is unlikely to succeed on the merits of its appeal of the injunction, we deny the motion for stay and the request to narrow the scope of the injunction,” the judges wrote [pdf].

The court’s order makes it tougher for Obama to implement what the White House had seen as one of the signature programs of his second term, with just 20 months left to go in his administration.

The Department of Justice is weighing its next move, according to an administration official. That could include an appeal to the full Fifth Circuit or to the Supreme Court.

After Congress declined to pass an immigration overhaul last year, Obama ordered the creation of a new program that allows parents of U.S. citizens or legal resident children to apply for temporary deportation relief and work permits.

He also expanded a similar program, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, that applies to immigrants who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

But Texas and 25 other states filed a lawsuit challenging those actions, arguing Obama exceeded his constitutional authority. They also said the programs would overburden state healthcare, education and motor-vehicle services.

The White House has long argued that the president acted within the law by using “prosecutorial discretion” to exempt certain immigrants from deportation who do not pose a public safety threat and who can contribute to their communities.

U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen in February slapped a preliminary injunction on the programs to stop them from taking effect while he considered the lawsuit.

The Department of Justice fought back in court, asking the Fifth Circuit for an emergency stay lifting the order in March. The administration argued the states had no standing to bring the case because the federal government has the sole power to enforce immigration law.

Fifth Circuit Judges Jennifer Elrod and Jerry Smith said the stay should remain in effect because the states had made a compelling case they would suffer harm if the programs went into effect.

“The public interest favors maintenance of the injunction,” the judges wrote. They also said granting stays of deportation to broad groups of immigrants goes beyond the president’s “prosecutorial discretion.”
“It is the affirmative act of conferring ‘lawful presence’ on a class of unlawfully present aliens,” the judges wrote. “Though revocable, that new designation triggers eligibility for federal and state benefits that would not otherwise be available.”
Elrod and Smith are both Republican appointees. Judge Stephen Higginson, an Obama appointee, dissented.
Higginson sided with the administration, arguing there is strong legal precedent showing immigration enforcement “must be decided, presently is being decided, and always has been decided, by the federal political branches.”

The White House slammed the majority opinion, accusing Elrod and Smith of choosing “to misinterpret the facts and the law in denying the government's request for a stay.”

“The president's actions … are squarely within the bounds of his authority and they are the right thing to do for the country,” said spokesperson Brandi Hoffine.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) called the Fifth Circuit’s ruling a “victory for the Constitution.”

“I am pleased with the Court of Appeals for preserving the injunction against President Obama’s unlawful action and for recognizing the fundamental principles upon which our nation was founded,” he said.

Immigrant-rights groups acknowledged the ruling was a setback and urged the Obama administration to appeal it to the Supreme Court.

“Today’s decision allows the lower court’s legally unsound decision blocking immigration relief to stay in place,” said Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center. “We call upon the Justice Department to continue its efforts to get this injunction lifted by bringing the matter before the Supreme Court without delay.”

In addition to asking for a stay, the Justice Department has appealed the legal merits of Hanen’s order. A separate Fifth Circuit panel is expected to hear arguments in July.

With the administration and the states showing no signs of giving in, the legal battle could spill into next year.

That could have implications for the 2016 election. Republicans have blasted Obama’s immigration actions as an overreach.

Republican National Committee spokesperson Ruth Guerra knocked Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential frontrunner, for saying she would expand upon Obama's executive actions.

“Today’s decision by the courts should come as no surprise to President Obama, who admitted over 22 times he didn’t have the legal authority to take this politically-motivated action or to Hillary Clinton who’d like to go further," she said.

But Democrats and Latino groups could use GOP opposition to highlight its intra-party squabbles on immigration.

Hincapié called the lawsuit “a clear attack on our communities.”

“The longer justice is delayed, the harder the impact will be on our families,” she said

Re-Thinking Memorial Day

Black supremacists have inspired me to re-think how I approach Memorial Day. Since they have been waging a war of annihilation on America for generations, it would be improper for me to continue limiting my Memorial Day coverage to those Americans who have fallen in foreign wars. Thus, henceforth, I shall treat victims of the black race war on a par with our foreign war dead.
