Seems safe to say the following headline and story are unique in human history, and will remain so.

“teen dies during heatwave hike, stepfather fatally crashes seeking help at big bend national park”

https://news4sanantonio.com/news/local/teen-dies-during-heatwave-hike-stepfather-fatally-crashes-seeking-help-at-big-bend-national-park-local-san-antonio-texas-del-rio#

“a 14-year-old boy died while hiking in extreme heat at big bend national park. His stepfather died after crashing his vehicle while trying to get help, according to a news release by national park service.”

The stepson is 14, his brother is 21, the stepfather is (only) 31.

Not quite Darwin Award candidates, but hiking in extreme heat is like going to Central Park at 2 a.m. to—you’re probably gonna get it.

The biggest problem Big Bend would be seeking help. So remote and sparsely populated by tourists, hikers, campers.

Kinda like spending a fortune to go down in an experimental sub to see a shipwreck that you can see on video in complete safety--a needless risk. Life is too precious to throw away.
