Dallas: Respectable Black Folks Have a Civilized H.S. Graduation Party; As They Leave, Known Gang-Bangers Who Had Sought to Shoot Up Party Shoot Four

Kids, 10-18; Story Since Sent Down Memory Hole

Victim Deunica Wines, 17, was shot in the upper torso, and was described one day later variously as being in "serious" and in "critical" condition. No updates on her status have since been published. It's also not clear to me which girl in the picture above is Vines, though I'm guessing it's the one on the left.

Has anyone ever researched how much bloodshed goes on along the Malcolm X Boulevards of this once fair land? I realize that much has been written on the violent history of the nation’s Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevards. And of course, there is a seeming irony to the King boulevard violence, since those thoroughfares were named after a man who pretended to abhor violence, while Malcolm Little/X/Shabbazz openly embraced bloodshed.

With those generalities out of the way, this story is bothering me more than the usual weekend shootings.

Parents were on hand, and they had hired off-duty Dallas cops to provide security, which is apparently why the shooters didn’t shoot anyone inside, where they had started the trouble. At the scene, partygoers said they knew the shooters, yet there has been no report since then—and believe me, I searched—identifying them, let alone that either had been arrested. Are the “respectable” black folks covering for them?

See my running commentary.

“Kids Started Running” When Shots Fired at Dallas Graduation Party

Graduation gunfire: At least four young people were shot and wounded early Sunday morning on a South Dallas streetcorner.

DALLAS — More than 100 young people packed a building in the 3200 block of Malcolm X Boulevard at Pennsylvania Avenue in Dallas for a graduation party Saturday night.

But after midnight, violence interrupted the celebration.

"When I heard the gunshots, I hurried up and turned and then next thing you know, there are four people on the ground," said Julia Winston, who attended the event.

The party — apparently to honor two James Madison High School graduates — ended in gunfire early Sunday morning.

Police said two men pulled out guns. One fired into the air. Another person fried into a group of people outside the location.

The victims include a 10-year-old boy who was shot in the leg; an 18-year-old boy who was shot in the foot; a 17-year-old girl who was shot in the leg; and a 17-year-old girl who was shot in torso.

Three of the victims were in stable condition Sunday night; the fourth was is in serious condition at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Friends told News 8 that one of the victims is Deunica Wines.

"Just to see her sitting there — laying there with blood coming up — I was scared,' said friend MiSharron Allen. "I just jumped in the car with her momma and we went to the hospital."

[It’s not clear from the context whether Wines’ mother drove her to the hospital, or an ambulance took her, and the mother took the friend. In many black neighborhoods, especially in cities like Chicago and Detroit, where there are constant shootings, especially on weekends that begin on Thursdays, blacks routinely drive shooting victims, even strangers, to hospitals, lest they die waiting for an ambulances.

I do not recommend that whites do this, because blacks now routinely pose as persons in distress, in order to lure white Good Samaritans into helping them, so they can rob, rape, murder, etc., them.]

Investigators say an argument between someone at the party and a group of people led to the shooting. Sources tell News 8 the group was told to leave.

Minutes later, police say two men from the group took out their guns.

Trina King says she went to the event to help out. She told us organizers hired security and that the shooting happened after the event was over.

"The party was already closed," King said. "The doors were already locked. Everyone was out of the building. The building was locked, so people were actually waiting for their parents or their ride."

But the night's events still left the victims' friends shaken.

"That's the hurtful part; it's people we know," said Julia Winston. "We didn't think it was going to turn out like this."

Sources also told News 8 investigators are looking for two people of interest. Their names have not been released, but apparently they have gang ties. The gang unit is investigating.

[Thanks to the reader-researcher RC, who sent me this story.

I tried to find out how Deunica Wines and the other three young shooting victims were doing, but all I could find was the following two dispatches from one day after the shooting. And the first story does indeed have important additional information: There were a number of parents present, as well as off-duty policemen hired to provide security. Thus, we know that these were respectable people. That’s why the shooters didn’t dare to start firing inside the building where the party was taking place.

And yet, after May 28, this story disappeared. There’s no word on the shooters, even though partygoers knew them.]

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A 17-year-old girl remains hospitalized after she was shot during a graduation party in Southeast Dallas.

Witnesses said on Saturday night hundreds gathered at a building that is rented out for parties on the 3200 block of Malcolm X Boulevard near Pennsylvania Avenue for what was supposed to be a private graduation party for two Madison High School students.

CBS11 has learned that two suspects were asked to leave the party after a verbal dispute with someone else.

Moments later shots were fired.

One suspect shot his gun in the air, another shot into the crowd from a car, police said.

"They started crying, screaming, looking for their friends and hoping it was not their friends," said Trina King, who was at the party helping out.

"Somebody in a car and then somebody beside me was shooting. He was shooting up in the air, he shot a lot of times but the boy in the car he was just shooting randomly out of the car," said Laciera Lewis, who attended the party.

She later learned her friend, 17-year-old Deunica Wines, with whom she came to the party, was one of the four victims shot.

An-18-year old man was shot in the foot, a 17 year old girl was shot in the leg and a 10 year old boy was shot in the thigh.

Wines was shot in the torso. The bullet pierced her lung and she remains in intensive care but is recovering.

"We just came from the hospital. They said they took the breathing tube out of Deunica so she's doing good," Lewis said.

King said was a chaperone at the party and that the shooting took place after the party ended.

"There were parents here as well as hired officers," she said.

The other victims are recovering. Police are still looking for the suspects who they believe may have gang connections.

[Dallas Morning News crime reporters Scott Goldstein and Avi Selk gave one report and two updates in the first 14 hours after the shooting, and promised to provide additional information, but other crimes surely grabbed their attention, and this one soon became old news.]

What is a 10-year old allowed to attend a party for a high school graduate? Going to the graduation ceremony? Okay. After party? No.

OTOH, why must every HS graduate have a party? Graduating from HS is nothing special these days, nor some great accomplishment. It's my feeling that if there is a shooting at your HS grad party, then you probably really didn't deserve to graduate from HS to begin with.
