Mix Broderick Crawford, John Derek, Donna Reed, Phil Karlson and “one of the greatest Americans of the Twentieth Century,” and Get the Film Noir, Scandal Sheet (1952)

N.S. note: My apologies go out to my friend and partner in crime, David in TN, whom I had failed to give a heads-up that I was leaving town that Friday. I had already hit the road a few hours before David sent in his capsule review.

TCM's Noir of the Week for Sunday, September 24, at 10 a.m. ET, is Scandal Sheet (1952). Broderick Crawford stars as the editor of a large New York City newspaper, which he has turned into a trashy tabloid.

At a Lonely Hearts Club dance sponsored by the paper, Crawford's wife, whom he’d abandoned years earlier, threatens to make trouble for him. Crawford loses his temper and kills her. Crawford tries to cover up the murder, but his reporters dig into the story.

John Derek and Donna Reed costar as reporters. Phil Karlson directed. Scandal Sheet is based on a novel by a man host Eddie Muller calls “one of the greatest Americans of the Twentieth Century, Samuel Fuller.”

TCM's Film Noir of the Week for Sunday, October 8, at 10 am ET is They Won't Believe Me (1947). It stars Robert Young, Susan Hayward, and Jane Greer. Young is cast against type as a rotten cad with two lady friends (Hayward and Greer) and a forgiving, wealthy wife (Rita Johnson) who always takes him back.

The philandering of Young's character leads to tragedy and a murder charge against him.
