That article was insane--written by a woke(insane)female.
"Whiteness is a feeling of being empty."

LMAO.
So some people pretend to be women when they're men,men when they're women, black when they're White and now Indian when they were whatever.

Yes,all those people, attempting to be what they are not,are empty--IN THE HEAD.

"Instead, individuals who previously identified as white are now claiming to be Native American."

All about benefits. If you are a certain percentage American Indian blood and depending on what tribe you can be entitled to benefits.

American Indians have a legal status unique in the entire world. Citizens of the USA and also their particular American Indian tribe. Super-citizens.

First of all, a huge number of American Indians are part white. There was a shortage of white women on the frontier so trappers, prospectors, and pioneers often took an Indian wife. And interracial marriage continues to this day. I have talked to Indians who will admit that there are White people in their family. Having lived in the Southwest, I know that many young Indian women are very attractive. However, there is motivation for whites to claim to be Indian to escape the prevailing anti-white racism that is seen everywhere these days. And some whites attempt to get affirmative action by claiming to be Indian--like Elizabeth Warren. Others hope to cash in on the Indian casinos if they can show they are part Indian. I suspect many of these claims to be Indian are due to mental illness. Several decades ago I met a woman who not only claimed to be 15 or 20 years younger than she obviously was, but also "felt" she was an Indian even thought she admitted her mother said she wasn't. I think these people feel like being Indian will make them somehow special--kinda like men who used to imagine they were Napoleon.

American Indians both men and women have the highest rate of interracial marriage of any group in America.

Even though my father and grandfather were registered members of a N. Dakota Indian tribe, it's not that simple to become a tribal member. Most tribes have restricted membership to keep people like me, below a certain blood quantum (25%), from becoming members. There is oil money and casino money at stake and Native Americans have proven to be just as greedy and self centered as everybody likes to claim the White man is.

Problem with blood quantum is that eventually every Native American will fall below a certain threshold and the US government has dictated that you have to at least have 25% NA blood to own reservation land and be recognized as an Indian to get benefits. That way the government will eventually obtain and control all Indian lands and end all treaties that have been signed. If Native Americans weren't so short sighted and self centered they'd agitate to change the definition of Native American away from blood quantum and to something that can't be defined out of existence. But, Natives with higher blood quantum levels have realized they can use it to leverage others out of tribes and get more money for themselves. They don't care about the future.

However, the Oklahoma tribes were recently able to get the government to recognize cultural continuity rather than blood quantum so they could keep their land indefinitely, regardless of how watered down they become. This act is called the Stigler act and was signed by none other than Donald Trump. Most Native Americans don't realize just how monumental this act is, it sets a precedent for other tribes to do the same but it still requires Native Americans with higher blood quantum to set aside their self interests and work together with others. I'm not holding my breath on that one because I have direct experience with the attitudes of the higher blood quantum Indians.

The Stigler Act is probably the most significant event for Natives since the establishment of the reservation system, which gave them millions of acres of land which at the time was fairly worthless but now is immensely valuable. Now they can keep it forever if they would set aside greed and self interest. Most Native Americans have no idea that Donald Trump, who most hate, supported the Stigler act by signing it. That act failed under Obama twice.
