A disturbing result -- he didn't just react violently and punch the guy, he savagely beat him to death (never mind the sleazy circumstances).
I said 'result' rather than verdict because a verdict is (ideally) reached after deliberation, and is based on the charge, trial/evidence, and instructions to the jury; the latter are usually specific to the charge -- so I allow for the possibility that the prosecution overcharged (2nd degree murder) and/or did not make the case for guilt 'beyond a reasonable doubt', everything considered: charge, trial/evidence, instructions.
But recall in the case of Derek Chauvin, they basically threw the book at him, charging him with an array of offenses, and giving the jury the option of finding him guilty/not proven guilty on any/all of them (e.g. they could find him guilty of lesser charges) -- ultimately Chauvin was found guilty of everything they charged him with -- his conviction on 3rd degree murder was later immediately overturned on appeal, showing how political the charging, trial, and verdict in that case all were.
Also recall that in the Arbery case, one of the defendants was charged with murder and sentenced to life in prison for just being there, i.e. being one of the men on scene when Arbery was stopped, and taking video of what happened.
Astute white men may want to take note of all this.
