This doesn't have all that much to do with Merkel -- more with the constant denunciation of AfD politicians as Nazis (also in state media), as well as the very public, very fanatical and irrational rhetorical fight against practically non-existent rightwing extremism and violence (all of that is more pronounced in DE due to the past when real Nazis existed).
The exact same situation is seen in the US: the political and media establishments ignore, sometimes even encourage, antifa/leftwing violence, including when it is very serious and widespread (see BLM in 2020) -- at the same time, they rhetorically inveigh against non-existent 'white supremacist terrorism'.
