Mets Baseball, April 10: deGrom Gives Up 1 Run, Strikes Out 14 in Another Loss

Outfielder Brandon Nimmo swears, "We're not trying to sabotage him."

N.S.: I like Brandon Nimmo, but when I hear that, I suspect exactly the opposite. Actually, I suspected it already.

The way deGrom played in his first two games this season, he didn't just look like Cy Young, he looked like the league MVP. He needs a hit, he gets a hit. He needs to move up on the bases, to help his team score, so he takes third on a fly out that wasn't even deep, but he saw that the Marlins' centerfielder had to back up a few steps at the last second, so Jake knew he would be in a less-than-ideal throwing position, so Jake safely made it to third, with only one out. But his star teammates failed to do their job, with Pete Alonso amd Michael Conforto both striking out. After two games, he has an 0.64 ERA and a record of 0-1. He ought to be 2-0.

At one point during yesterday's game, announcer Gary Cohen said of deGrom, "He's gotta do it all himself."

Mets skipper Luis Rojas needs to bench stars like Francisco Lindor, Dom Smith, and Pete Alonso for deGrom's next start. There have to be consequences. (I didn't list Michael Conforto or Jeff McNeil, because they're not hitting for anyone.)
