Opening Day: Mets Beat Cubs 10-6

"W": Jesse Orosco gets the final out, as the Cubs score 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning at a cold Wrigley Field, April 5, 1979.

For the season, the Cubs finished 5th, 80-82 under Herman Franks. Rick Reuschel, who lost the opener, had a fine season overall, going 18-12. Dave Kingman, playing left field, hit 48 home runs.

The Mets went 63-99 under Joe Torre. Craig Swan, who won the opener, went 14-13 with 10 complete games. Lee Mazzilli hit .303 with 15 homers.

Original WGN-TV broadcast:

The players weren't taking a knee for blm thugs then, and mlb didn't endorse boy-butting "pride" parades, nor side with election fraudsters. How things have changed...for the worse.

Thanks for the reminiscences of a better time in baseball. Lots of Bay Area overlap in your comments. Herman Franks managed and coached for the Giants and Kingman played for both the Giants and the As.

I watched the Cubs a lot in those days--loved baseball back then-even though I was a diehard Sox fan.Kingman was worth the time, just to see him hit that occasional 500 ft shot onto Waveland Ave.Just from memory, those years were not good ones for the Cubs--not until Ryne Sandberg showed up,about 2-3 years later.
