russia has pretty much wiped out the ukraine’s layered air defenses, other than those that ring kiev.

"Reports are breaking that Russia has launched its largest offensive on Ukraine to date, as hypersonic missiles have just launched at Ukraine."

No evidence at all is given that "hypersonic missiles" were used. None of the reliable Telegram or Twitter channels providing info on the war report use of "hypersonic missiles".

Also these accounts are not reporting anything special is going on:

Russia uses a lot of UAVs (drones) to attack Ukrainian military assets. These have small prop motors. They are low flying and fairly slow. But cheap.

When Russia uses cruise missiles, it is almost entirely normal air (and sea) launched cruise missiles, which use jet engines and are subsonic. Recent reports indicate they are also now using JDAM munitions (Russia has its own GPS satellite system called GLONASS). Per info, these are older, larger air dropped bombs modified with kits to turn them into gliding, guided bombs. These older, larger bombs being converted to guided munitions have more explosive punch (500kg and more of high explosives).

There is no need to use the more expensive hypersonic missiles for these strikes, which happen all the time. Right now the Russians seem to be trying to hit troops and supplies being stored for the upcoming/rumored offensive by Ukraine.

Recently it was reported the UK has provided longer range cruise missiles to Ukraine, and that Ukraine may use these to target Russian warships in the Black Sea, some of which are launch platforms for cruise missiles. This is a major escalation. But the US and UK are growing bolder because Putin never makes them pay a price. He never enforces red lines.

Saw a brief interview with Putin where he spoke about the difficulty of trying to interdict weapons coming to Ukraine from the West. A first step would be to target every airport runway in Ukraine capable of handling military xport aircraft. The converted JDAM munitions can be used for this.

Many pro Russia social media accounts complain Russia still seems reluctant to fully engage its air force (which is not huge) in the was, mostly out of fear of Ukrainian air defense.

Saw where a retired US military person said giving F-16s to Ukraine was pointless because they would be neutralized by Russian S-400 systems. F-16s will not help Ukraine.

Current rumors that Russia lost several aircraft today over the disputed territory. Some maybe shot down, others may have crashed. Not clear now. But a video reportedly of one event looks like a shoot down.

Some speculation that Ukraine used longer range air-to-air anti-aircraft missiles supplied by the West to down the aircraft. These can be fired from deep inside Ukraine territory where the Ukraine aircraft are safe from Russian AA systems.

A weapon like this:

Russia invites this escalation by the West where increasingly capable weapons systems are supplied to Ukraine because Russia does nothing in response.
