From the link:

We haven’t ruled out anything,” Santa Fe County District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies told the New York Times on Tuesday.

Later:

An “enormous amount of bullets” was found during a search of the set, Carmack-Altwies said, ...

Pro tip for the lady DA:

Amount vs. number -- Amount is used in reference to mass nouns (i.e., uncountable nouns such as bravery, water, and charisma). Number is used in reference to count nouns (i.e., countable nouns such as dog, year, and eyeball).

Mentally add bullet (or bullets) to the latter list -- so number of bullets, not amount of bullets -- amount of ammunition would be correct.

Mary Carmack-Altwies has spent her professional career working to address issues of safety and justice. ... A graduate of University of New Mexico School of Law, Mary lives in Santa Fe with her wife Jo, a retired law enforcement officer, and their two energetic young children.

Lovely.

That was my response. Why even have live ammo on the set?

Evidently so it is said some members of the studio crew were using the weapon for target practice between filming.
