I found myself in a similar situation that Daniel Penny was in Manhattan on Thursday. Was walking past a burger/ coffee joint I frequent in Midtown and a female employee was outside engaged in a pushing and shoving match with what I assumed was a black homeless man. Don't know the nature of the dispute, but I got in the middle of it to diffuse the situation, disobeying my cardinal rule of not getting involved. He was still threatening and posturing, but unlike with her, wasn't putting his hands on me. I told him he was too old and to fuck off, which after some face saving bluster, he did. In the back of my mind was the racial dynamic. Had things gone south I could quite easily have become the latest poster boy of white supremacy.
