The above list contains my choices for the world’s 22 greatest soccer movies. The best soccer movie is no soccer movie.

Alright, if you’re really going to force the issue, the greatest soccer movie of all time was The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), followed by Citizen Kane (1941). (In Best Years, the Harold Russell character speaks of “football.” Can’t recall if it came up in Kane. Oh, yes! There was a crooked coach named “Big Jim” Getties.)

the hollywood reporter, a nominally u.s. media organization, hates Americans and Whites. And so, as a token of its contempt, it assigned four of its operatives, Neil Young, Scott Roxborough, Alex Ritman and Abid Rahman to conjure up a “thing,” to express said contempt.

“goal! the 22 best soccer movies

“from offside to bend it like Beckham to shaolin soccer, there are plenty of films that capture one of the most popular sports in the world.”

the firm (1989)

“As well as being one of britain’s leading tv dramatists, Alan Clarke was also an inveterate supporter of everton fc — his experiences at goodison park and away grounds informing this penetrating study of football [sic] hooliganism in the Thatcher era. Gary Oldman, as buzz-seeking ring-leader Bex, has never been so coiled-snake alarming.”

Ah, so the movie isn’t on the list because it was excellent, but in order to tie Mrs. Thatcher, may she rest in peace, to soccer hooliganism. You see, soccer hooligans are “fascists,” and so they were conjured out of thin air by Mrs. Thatcher, and they disappeared once labor came back into power.

I’d never heard of Alan Clarke, but I have heard of an Englishman named T.E.B. “Tibby” Clarke, who was one of the world’s greatest screenwriters (The Lavender Hill Mob, 1951; Sons and Lovers, 1960; etc.). I wonder if the four thr operatives have ever so much as heard of Tibby Clarke.

Or great basketball movies (soccer only exists to keep basketball from being the world's dullest sport). -RM
