One of my brothers is a medical doctor.
He was educated at Hopkins, Yale and Harvard.
As a Hopkins undergraduate student he did research one summer in Jamaica. It was in geology.
This was many decades ago.

Manley cracked down hard on guns during his term in the '70s.
I asked my brother what happened in Jamaica during Manley's term This was after my brother returned to the States.
"There was an increase in machete and knife murders," he said.
It never is about the weapon.
It is always about the person who wields the weapon.

Novelist Paul Auster thinks otherwise: his new book "Bloodbath Nation" about mass shootings avoids any mention of the demographics of crime. This should not be surprising, given his political stance “to the left of the Democratic Party.” In this he is 180 degrees away from the views of his late cousin Larry.
They always speak of approaching and solving the ROOT CAUSE but it never seems to be approached or solved.
