Social service workers are so inept that they think everyone is as incapable as they are. Kids these days are supposed to be helpless--well, if they are, it is bad parenting. I babysat my sister when I was 10 years old. And when I was much younger, I spent hours in the woods alone looking for snakes and other reptiles and amphibians. In the past, kids grew up and had responsibilities at much younger ages. I read of a clipper ship captain who was only 21, Buffalo Bill had a variety of dangerous jobs when he was 15, and I believe when Annie Oakley was 14 she roamed the woods hunting game to support her family. Of course girls got married early and took care of families at young ages too--16, 15--even 13. And kids knew how to shoot too--to feed their families and to fight off Indians and robbers. I guess now kids are just supposed to sit in their bedrooms playing video games.
