The Guatemalan Diaspora

Here's a series of three articles in The New Yorker from April, all reported from rural Guatemala.

https://www.newyorker.com/news/dispatch/how-climate-change-is-fuelling-the-us-border-crisis Emphasis on climate change in the sense of the seasons becoming less predictable (but also with invocation of "denial," which makes me grind my teeth).  Overall, I have the sense that human desperation of the sort described here will be spreading worldwide.

II https://www.newyorker.com/news/dispatch/the-epidemic-of-debt-plaguing-central-american-migrants  Contains sob-story elements but not told in sob-story style.

III https://www.newyorker.com/news/dispatch/the-dream-homes-of-guatemalan-migrants  Includes interesting fact about the problem engendered by cheap corn from Mexico ...

Just because our country--founded by whites--created a wealthy, powerful nation, the rest of the world became jealous and decided they wanted to fill it up with immigrants-to create a downward parity with the unsuccessful countries outside of the US.China and Russia would love to see us fill up with blacks,Mex and Muslim wouldn't they?Easy to defeat in a war.

More than likely they just abuse the land with antiquated farming techniques. Used to be a lot of slash and burn. I am not sure if they do that anymore.
