No shocker: kiss guitarist, Ace Frehley, pulls a McConnell, falls down (weeks ago) and cracks his head open, finally kissing it all goodbye today--at 74

“Morristown, n.j. (ap) — Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and founding member of the glam rock band kiss who captivated audiences with his elaborate makeup and smoke-filled guitar, died thursday. he was 74.

“Frehley died peacefully surrounded by family in Morristown following a recent fall, according to his agent.

“family members said in a statement that they are 'completely devastated and heartbroken' but will cherish his laughter and celebrate the kindness he bestowed upon others.

“Frehley and his band mates were inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 2014.”

GRA: Not my kind of music, mostly. “Beth” was pretty good.

Frehley and original drummer Peter Criss were kicked out of KISS because they couldn't control their addiction problems. Simmons and Stanley partied up a storm themselves but if they had addiction issues, they never let them interfere with the business of KISS. Some people can do that, they can be addicted some kind of substance but still function normally. Ray Charles was another one like that, he had a nasty heroin habit for many years but never missed a concert date or recording session. Mick Jagger another one, while bandmate Keith Richards struggled with being functional, Jagger's drug use never interfered with his ability to perform or record. Richards described in his autobiography how he turned the business of the band over to Jagger during his drug hazed years because Mick stayed lucid despite his own addiction issues.
As for Stanley, whatever his issue were with drugs, when he was with the band they made their best music. Not that I'm a big fan, I'm not, but my brother was so I was exposed to their music quite a bit. Rock and Roll All Nite was a pretty good party anthem and there were a few other decent tracks here and there but overall their music just didn't grab me. But those early album with Stanley playing and contributing songs were definitely much better than their later stuff, which was downright putrid for the most part.
