Mayor desperate to find a friend to support his billion-dollar tax proposal.

"mayor Brandon Johnson is hard pressed to find support for his over $1 billion tax increase plan to close a budget hole in his proposed $16 billion dollar spending plan. even ald. Jason Ervin, hand-picked by Johnson to shepherd the budget through city council, has criticized the plan to extract funds from the tax increment financing (tif) districts around the city, the chicago tribune reports. and the mayor has opposition from rules committee chair ald. Michelle Harris, and ald. Walter "Red" Burnett, his latest appointee to the council.

"a separate part of the mayor's tax proposal, the head tax , was slammed by J.B. Pritzker at a recent appearance before the chicago economic club. under the head tax, city businesses employing more than 100 would remit $21 per employee every month.

"on the tif front, the illinois policy institute (ipi) broke down the mayor's proposal, an analysis that includes a primer on what tifs are.

"In the wake of the mayor's proposal many aldermen are questioning the decision, while others are highlighting the fundamental issues with Tax Increment Finance districts themselves," writes Bryce Hill, Director of Fiscal and Economic Analysis for the Illinois Policy Institute. "In the past decade, the amount of TIF dollars the city has declared as 'surplus' has increased by nearly ninefold, rising from $113 million in 2016, to more than $1 billion for the 2026 fiscal year."

Northwest Side shooting leaves one dead and another in critical condition

Early Saturday morning, police responded to an car accident scene at 4400 block of W. Augusta Boulevard in the Humboldt Park neighborhood where they found a 37-year-old man dead in the car with a gunshot wound to the back, and a 29-year-old in the car in critical condition with multiple shots to the head, according to Fox 32 Chicago.

Governor, Fox News anchor worlds apart in assessing Chicago's murder rate.

Gov. JB Pritzker and Fox New host Brett Baier were not even close in their assessments of where Chicago's murder rate stands compared with other large US cities. On Friday, Pritzker told Baier that the city's murder rate compared to other large cities did not even reach – believe it or not – the top thirty. This, while Baier flashed a map showing that Chicago at 17.4 murder per one hundred thousand residents had the highest murder rate. New York City by comparison has a rate of 4.1.

Pritzker took credit for the rate that he says is dropping "double digits" every year by investing more in the State Police. Meanwhile, the complement for the police in Chicago, where the murders are occurring, is down 2,000.

Democratic cities including Washington D.C. have become adept at fudging their crime statistics.

Mayor says that calling someone an "illegal alien" is the legal equivalent of calling Black people slaves.

Back in 2019 former CNN commentator Chris Cuomo blasted a man who in a public setting called him "Fredo," the weakest of the brothers in the first two Godfather movies from the early 1970s. Cuomo erupted saying that calling him, an Italian American, "Fredo" was equivalent to using the N-word for Italians.

Now Mayor Brandon Johnson took a similar linguistic leap on Friday by blasting a reporter on Friday who used the term "illegal alien." He called the term "racist" and "nasty."

"We don't have illegal aliens," Johnson said to the reporter. "I don't know if that's from some sort of sci-fi message that you wish you've had… Well listen, the legal term for my people was slaves. You want me to use that term too? So, look, let's just get the language right. We're talking about undocumented individuals that are human beings."

The use of the word "alien" comes from the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 and the Naturalization Act of 1790.

Many news organizations and elected officials have dropped "alien" in favor of undocumented immigrant or even the less descriptive and completely unoffensive "migrant."

Governor's new commission checking on federal agents has little power.

Last week, Gov JB Pritzker created the Illinois Accountability Commission to create a public record "of the abuses;" captivating the impact on families and communities; and last the group will recommend actions to "prevent further harm."

It's a nice sounding new government agency if you're buying into that Democratic line that Trump is deploying federal agents to establish a fascist outpost in Chicago, but it's unclear what actual authority the new commission since it does not have subpoena power. It will invite people to testify.

Second City Cop: FOP prez uses union credit card in trips to Croatia and Jamaica

The latest development in the troubled top leadership leader3shp of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #7 per Second City Cop is that President John Catanzara used an FOP credit card in trips to Croatia and Jamaica.

"Catanzara called witnesses to support his case, but they testified that he did not pay back money he was supposed to," Second City Cop wrote.

"Obviously, this is the basis for the rumored discussion someone overheard along the lines of, but if I pay it back, then there's no problem, right?'

"Actually, it's a problem, and a pretty large one. The FOP isn't a piggy bank or a pay-day loan service, fronting interest-free loans to previously bankrupt members who can't manage their own finances. If it was, we would have traveled more extensively when we were members."

Second City Cop is urging members to attend the next FOP meeting on the third Wednesday in November

St. Anthony's shot down by SCOTUS.

The Cook County Record reports that The U.S. Supreme Court will not take up an appeal from Chicago's Saint Anthony Hospital, which had sought to sue the state of Illinois to force the state to more quickly pay Medicaid payments when the hospitals believe the state's network of managed care groups aren't paying enough money, quickly enough, to satisfy Medicaid law.

On Oct. 20, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Saint Anthony's petition to review and ultimately overturn the 2025 decision of a federal appeals court in Chicago.

Ultimately, both sides agreed the question would be decided by a 2025 Supreme Court decision, notable for agreeing that states had the constitutional and legal authority to cut off Medicaid funding for abortion provider Planned Parenthood.

That ruling, in the case known as Medina v Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, more largely dealt with the question of whether individuals had the ability to sue state governments over how they administer federally-supplied Medicaid dollars.

BREAK IN CEASEFIRE IN GAZA,AFTER HAMAS KILLS ISRAELI SOLDIER;ISRAEL RETALIATES BY BOMBING GAZA,KILLING 100;"WE INTERRUPT THIS CEASEFIRE FOR A FEW HOURS OF WAR--NOW BACK TO THE 'CEASEFIRE' "

"The best ceasefire is one where neither side stops shooting."
--Grand Rapids Anonymous

(ZH)After Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday instructed the country's military to "carry out powerful strikes in Gaza," the IDF followed in a Wednesday morning statement saying it has resumed the ceasefire in Gaza. The military indicated it had launched "series of significant strikes in which dozens of terror targets and terrorists were attacked" - the result of Hamas gunmen allegedly opening fire on its troops.

Israel says that during this ground attack by Hamas in Rafah, an Israeli reservists was killed. "The slain soldier was named as Master Sgt. (res.) Yona Efraim Feldbaum, 37, a heavy machinery operator in the Gaza Division, from the West Bank settlement of Neria," Times of Israel reports.

Via IDF
But Gaza health authorities said more than 100 Palestinians were killed in the fresh strikes Tuesday strikes, which have at this point abated. Israel announced at 10am (local) that the ceasefire is once again in effect.

Rob Geist Pinfold, lecturer in international security at King’s College London, articulated his view to Al Jazeera that the strikes were "more or less clearly coordinated with the United States."

"Yes, Israel launched all of these strikes. Yes, this may feel like a breach of the ceasefire," he said. "But it’s unlikely that this wasn’t agreed in advance with the Americans." He says Washington would have been on board with retribution, albeit brief or temporary, given an Israeli soldier was killed despite the Trump-brokered ceasefire being on.

Pinfold described that US officials would "almost certainly be saying in private to the Israeli government: 'OK, you have a right to respond but you also have a necessity to stop. We are not letting you collapse the deal.'"

GRA:Like many other things "fake" these days,a fake ceasefire.

FAKE ATTENDANCE AT HOCKEY GAMES?

GRA:Just saw this post as I looked at google World Series headlines:

"I would like to see NHL turnstile attendance. I watched the Vgs @ Car game last night, announced attendance was 18,299, never once saw the upper bowl but the lower bowl was 1/2 empty! Are there really 4 to 5 thousand paid tickets going unused in Carolina or just as World Series night?"

MORE FAKERY IN GOVERNMENT FINANCES--LIBERACE BESSENT(WITH SENATOR CYNTHIA LUMMIS DOING THE WORK IN CONGRESS) WANTS TO START ISSUING GOLD CERTIFICATES TO BUY BITCOIN

GRA:I assume as a way to nibble into the debt.Of course,
bitcoin is worthless.

(moneychanger.com)The latest nutty scheme which apparently has Trump’s approval is a Bitcoin strategic reserve. Back in February treasury secretary Bessent said they want to “mobiliz[e] the asset side of the balance sheet.” For “mobilize” read “monetize and financialize.” Now along comes Senator Cynthia Lummis with her draft Bitcoin Act strategic reserve.

It would convert existing gold certificates held by the Federal Reserve into Bitcoin, “mobilizing” $1.5 trillion in US reserves. The Treasury would require the Federal Reserve to return existing gold certificates valued today at $42.22 an ounce and revalue gold to, say, $4,200 an ounce to fund yearly Bitcoin purchases of $90 to $200 billion a year.

The Treasury would take in the old gold certificates and by accounting magic revalue and re-issue them at $4,200 an ounce. (Now that’s a mobilization.) The Federal Reserve would then buy the new gold certificates and remit the cash difference between the old and new certificates to the treasury’s general fund. The Fed is out of pocket nothing because they create money out of thin air by the miracle of double entry bookkeeping – they buy an asset, the certificate, and create the money to pay for it, a liability, easy-sneezy, on their own balance sheet The government would use the accounting windfall to fund yearly Bitcoin purchases of $90 to $200 billion.

Grasp the scheme: gold revaluation would create a government balance sheet credit which would be used to buy a proposed 200,000 Bitcoin yearly for 20 years, buying the Bitcoin on the open market. Now how do y’all suppose present Bitcoin owners view having the US government’s bottomless pockets supporting the Bitcoin market year after year? Right. Are y’all surprised that banks, billionaires, and Wall Street have been piling into Bitcoin in recent years?

I’m all for sound money and revaluing the government’s gold (stolen from the people in 1934) and applying it to the national debt. I am not particularly in favor of lining the pockets of the rich with government money and accounting tricks, crusty old cave dweller that I am.

"CEASEFIRE BOMBINGS" FROM ISRAELI WARPLANES CONTINUE THURSDAY

(ZH)The Israel-Hamas ceasefire continues hanging by a thread(GRA:Depends what the meaning of "ceasefire" is),now about two-and-a-half weeks in, but there are new reports of airstrikes in Gaza by Israeli warplanes.

Israeli warplanes and tanks struck targets in eastern Gaza on Thursday, according to Palestinian residents and witnesses, cited in Reuters and other outlets. Over 100 Palestinians have died after on Tuesday Israel resumed airstrikes, citing the death of an IDF reserve soldier after Hamas gunmen opened fire in Rafah.

Wednesday saw Israel's military proclaim that it was returning to observing the ceasefire, following pressure from the White House. But Thursday's new airstrikes suggest fighting and bombardments have continued, and events on the ground have not aligned with the public-facing rhetoric.

GRA:Robert Palmer needs to sing,"Addicted to Love(Bombs)".
