.304 wins nl batting average

.304 wins nl batting average

I recalled that Carl Yastrzemski was the AL batting champ in 1968 with a .301 average.

Pete Rose was the nl batting champ, hitting a respectable .335

A second colleague: Maybe someday a .250 hitter will lead in batting average.

Yes, I agree batting average has been overrated; recall Rogers Hornsby sneering at Roger Maris's 61 homers because he only hit .269 (but still managed to lead the AL in runs and RBIs).

Turner's explanation is interesting.

Barry Bonds,Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire(among others)want jobs as batting instructors. They'll "instruct" today's players what part of their bodies to inject the steroids in so they can carry telephone poles to home plate.

Even with all the low averages, there aren't a lot of great pitchers to blame the poor hitting on. No Seavers,Carltons,Gibsons,Jenkins,McLains etc.

No 20 game winners that I recall this year. Just a lack of talent.
