Gene Hackman’s wife died first—of hantavirus (mouse poop disease); Mr. Hackman lasted a week afterwards

“(cnn) santa fe, new mexico- Gene Hackman died due to hypertensive atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimers as a significant contributing factor, new mexico officials confirmed friday. he was likely alone in the home for about a week, until he died around february 18th, which was the last time activity was recorded on his pacemaker.

“his wife, Betsy (Arakawa) Hackman, died due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which is transmitted from animals to humans and is commonly found in rodents, the new mexico department of health confirmed. Betsy’s autopsy determined the manner of death as natural. authorities believe Betsy died on about feb. 11.

“chief medical investigator dr. Heather Jarrell performed a full autopsy on Hackman the day after his body was discovered, which showed ‘severe heart disease, including multiple surgical procedures involving the heart, evidence of prior heart attacks, and severe changes of the kidneys due to chronic high blood pressure.’”

GRA: Incredible—about the wife.

We think my uncle died from hantavirus--after sweeping out a New York cabin in the woods. A woman died of it near me in Lynnwood, Washington. If you are sweeping out a place with mouse droppings, spray them first with a bleach and water solution and wear a good respirator.

Dying from a rodent-borne disease is death from "natural causes"? And these days even a "Chief Medical Examiner" is a job that goes to a woman ("Heather" no less)? WOMEN performing autopsies?
Life is complete madness.

Amazing. I'd never heard of hentavirus. Supposedly, only a particular type of rodent transmits it.

The NYT dutifully gave the wife her own obit- after all, she's a WOMAN and an ASIAN and an ARTIST- never mind that it would seem she did herself in along with her famous husband by being totally incompetent as both caregiver and housekeeper (the place must have been overrun with vermin). The "paper of record" hasn't seen fit to memorialize Gunilla Knutson.
Fooey.

No hired help for Alzheimer suffering Gene? He has an estimated net worth of 80 million which, even if an overestimate of his wealth, should be plenty to have round the clock nursing help for both of them. Maybe his wife was heroically tending to Gene's needs, or maybe even with his Alzheimer's he was still fairly compliant and mobile. Having had family suffering with long term mental and physical difficulties I know it's an extraordinarily difficult thing to deal with, if my family was as wealth as Gene was, it would have been a lot easier.
He must have been pretty far gone mentally to have lived with his wife's dead body for a week.
