It wouldn't have mattered to them one bit if they had known. They would have even been more supportive.

Yeah, it's contemptible -- but there are laws in the UK about 'causing offense', and many people have been visited by cops b/c of something they said -- in fact this happens regularly, b/c so many people are apparently easily offended.
