(nypost)The Chicago Police Department has unveiled a new policy prohibiting its officers from chasing people on foot simply because they run away, or because they have committed minor offenses.
The policy, which was introduced Tuesday, also encourages cops to “consider alternatives” to pursuing someone who “is visibly armed with a firearm.”
Under the policy, officers may give chase if they believe a person is committing or is about to commit a felony, a Class A misdemeanor such as domestic battery, or a serious traffic offense that could risk injuring others, such as drunken driving or street racing.
Perhaps most significantly, the new policy makes clear that the days of officers giving chase just because someone tries to get away from them are over.
“People may avoid contact with a member for many reasons other than involvement in criminal activity,” the policy states.

The long-awaited foot chase ban is expected to go into effect by the end of the summer, after the city’s 11,900 uniformed cops receive training.
GRA:I can't even comprehend this decision--to give criminals a free reign on the streets,knowing they will not be pursued.Crime has been legalized,for all intents and purposes.

(WOODTV)A Police investigation into the shooting death of a 69-year-old Grand Rapids man earlier this month has resulted in a suspect facing charges.
Richard John Jekel, who was known as as an advocate for older people and played on the University of Michigan football team that went to the 1972 Rose Bowl, was found dead in the rear seat of a car June 6 by police.
A 26-year-old Grand Rapids(black) man,Devon Matthews,is accused of murder after police found Jekel’s body in the car driven by a stalking suspect.
Grand Rapids police said charges of open murder and felony firearm have been authorized against the 26-year-old Matthews.
Grand Rapids police, according to a court affidavit, were conducting surveillance on the 26-year-old as part of an aggravated stalking complaint filed by a woman who lives in the 1900 block of Jefferson Avenue SE. Police were able to track his whereabouts easily because he already was wearing a GPS tether, ordered by a judge in a previous criminal case.

Court records show the woman was granted a personal protection order against the man.
While conducting the surveillance, officers watched the 26-year-old as he drove a station wagon out of a church parking lot next to the woman’s residence.
The driver apparently became aware that police were following him and abandoned the vehicle. He fled into a nearby park and went into a public restroom.
Police caught up and, after making the arrest, found a Ruger .380 pistol in a toilet.
Officers then went back to the station wagon and found Jekel’s body in the rear seat. The man initially was charged with aggravated stalking and several weapons charges and held in jail on a $10,000 bond.
During a court hearing Tuesday, June 21 on the stalking charge, Kent County Assistant Prosecutor Monica Janiskee asked for a higher bond. She said testing determined the gun found in the toilet also was used to shoot Jekel.
Family of Richard Jekel said he lived in the Saginaw area for many years and moved to Grand Rapids about a decade ago.
His daughter, Melissa Jekel, said she was close to her father. She was not aware of any connection between her father and the man facing the murder charge.
She said it was her father’s station wagon he was driving.
“He had a huge heart and really wanted to help people,” she said. “He didn’t judge anybody. If he could help, he would.”
Melissa Jekel said that, sometimes, other people called her father the “traveling taxi man” for his propensity to give people rides.
Jekel said her father played on the 1972 University of Michigan football team as a non-starting member.
She said that, in his later years, her father was an advocate for older people and would try to connect people with the resources they needed. She said he sometimes stayed in homeless camps.
After his death, she was surprised to learn how many friends he made over the years. Many reached out to her to tell stories about Matthew's.

Golly, the man is DOING something positive. Hard to believe almost. Those are all unlicensed and unregistered two-wheelers and others ridden in total disregard for the law. Golly, the man is DOING something. I wonder how many of those two-wheelers are STOLEN.

GRA:Didn't the cops say after the last murder,"there was no threat to the public?"Wrong again--and they haven't any idea who the perps are in any of the recent shootings.I'd say there's a threat to the public.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police are investigating a shooting that killed two men.
Officers were alerted to the incident just after 2:30 a.m. Thursday. The shooting happened in the 800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. St. SE, near the intersection of Eastern Avenue.
Police found both men at the scene and tried to revive them, to no avail. Authorities are withholding the victims’ names at this time(I'll guess Nefarious and Jacquarious Jones.)
Officers on scene told News 8 no suspect is in custody, but there is no threat to the public.

Martin Luther King Jr. St. between Dolbee and Eastern avenues was temporarily closed as detectives and forensic teams processed the scene, but the street has since reopened.
