The government tried to stamp out separatism and "assimilate" the Uyghurs by encouraging mass migration of Han Chinese, China's dominant ethnic group, to Xinjiang.

As in Tibet before. Move in prodigious numbers of Han Chinese and breed the Uighur out of existence. Eliminate the culture and the people.
