He will be made an example of. Not so much the money but the fact that he stole. $50K to the drug cartel. His fate will be grim I suspect.
He was an idiot to taunt them, especially without apparently having any weapons or armed friends around. And you never, ever go anywhere with kidnappers. Always make it as hard as possible for them, they're going to kill you anyway.
The cartels kidnap thousands of people a year. It's one of their big moneymakers.
