The officer who interviewed the victim afterwards said she 'cannot figure out why anyone would do this to her'. 'She stated that her family is in China, and it was very hard for her family to hear about this.'

Merely producing ball bat and threatening someone is a threat of using lethal force. You holding the bat are telling the other person I intend to kill you whether you mean it or not. This too is the behavior of the latent coward. Attacks that most vulnerable person from behnd with a full swing without any warning. Wasn't even a confrontation.

Asians seen by the black predator as an easy mark. Perceived as being less able to offer any sort of resistance. Predator animals in the wild follow the same hunting strategy.
Horrible crime, but she's the real threat, not him.
