Three Versions of Richard Markowitz’ Theme from the Classic TV Series, The Wild, Wild West, Including the Brilliant (Color) Animated, Opening Sequence

Re-posted by Nicholas Stix

With each of the later, extended versions, the reader will notice the arranger strutting his stuff, in emphasizing certain aspects and instruments, while always remaining true to Markowitz’ vision. And the later versions are even more Coplandian!

In case you disagree, I refer you to Aaron’s Billy the Kid ballet suite.

And to his Appalachian Spring:

“Video: Appalachian Spring, as Conceived, Choreographed, and Performed by Martha Graham; Music by Aaron Copland: Part 1 of 4;

“Aaron and Martha: Appalachian Spring, Part II of IV, Ballet and Music (Video)”;

“Part III of IV of Aaron Copland and Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring (Video)”; and

“The Fourth and Concluding Section of Aaron Copland and Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring (Video).”

The Wild Wild West TV Intro

The Rap Sheet

It was 50 years ago this month – on September 17, 1965, to be precise – that the TV drama The Wild Wild West premiered on CBS. The show starred Robert Conrad and Ross Martin as a pair of extraordinarily capable U.S. Secret Service agents operating during the late 1860s or early 1870s. Explains Wikipedia: “Developed at a time when the television western was losing ground to the spy genre, this show was conceived by its creator, Michael Garrison, as ‘James Bond on horseback.’”

(N.S.: Conrad said he did “my own stunts,” to which Martin quipped, “And I do my own acting.”)

In honor of this month’s anniversary, I am posting above a new and better version of that 1965-1969 TV series' opener, replacing one I put up on this page back in 2012.
