The girl’s vicious slaying remained a cold case until detectives used DNA evidence to link her disappearance to Martinez, who lived in the same building as her family, sources said.

I suspect external genetic forensics consultants had a lot more to do with breaking this case than the detectives; it would be interesting to know who helped them with the DNA analysis.

As perhaps I mentioned before, Steve Hsu, a professor of physics at Mich State, and others are involved in a genetic forensics company called Othram:

Othram -- Justice Through Genomics

They specialize in such 'cold cases' -- searching his blog for the term 'cold case' turns up a list of crimes Othram has helped solve -- Information Processing -- search term: 'cold case'
