"(rls media) an active and ongoing investigation is underway in the central ward of newark after a triple shooting left one person dead and two others hospitalized thursday afternoon.

"officials from the essex county prosecutor’s office and newark police responded to reports of gunfire around 2:30 p.m. in the area of Broome street near the new community corporation housing complex.

"according to preliminary information, officers arriving at the scene located three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

"one victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

"the two additional victims were transported to university hospital for treatment. their conditions have not yet been publicly disclosed.

"authorities also confirmed that a newark police officer sustained an injury while reportedly pursuing a possible suspect connected to the shooting.

"the extent of the officer’s injury has not been released.

"investigators remain on scene, canvassing the area for evidence and working to determine the circumstances that led to the gunfire.

"no arrests have been announced as of this report.

"the violence marks another troubling incident in what has been a dangerous stretch for the city, with four people shot in less than four hours across newark earlier today."
