Responses to "Big Brother Surveillance"

In response to the techno-dystopia article I sent around earlier, one recipient asked:

Can an owner turn off a cell phone's location?  If so, how?

Coincidentally, one of the others on this distribution, with background to know, wrote:

Cell phones can also be turned on remotely and the microphone and video functions can be used to spy on you. The ON/OFF button is merely a software switch which can be overridden. State actors have sophisticated capabilities in this regard which is why cell phones are not allowed in SCIFs. All that is required is a covert (to the phone's owner) visit by the phone to a web site of the attacker's choosing where the software is downloaded. That covert visit could be part of the "normal" log in to a common discussion group or app. It could be embedded in a subReddit or any other site targets are likely to visit.

You have no idea how penetrated you are. The question is do they care about you enough to process it?

A "SCIF" is a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility in a fedgov or fedgov contractor's installation, typically requiring a high-level security clearance to enter.

Malware inserted into your smart phone without you knowing it allows a distant user to l turn your smart phone on and off and use the smart phone without you even knowing it they can listen to what you’re doing determine your location and even perhaps see what you were doing again all this can be done without you even knowing what is happening
