"Dixie"
That's a fine, high-spirited rendition, but my favorite version is Max Steiner's at the beginning of Gone with the Wind (1939). Even though David O. Selznick's masterpiece opens at the height of the slavocracy's wealth and power, Steiner's choral arrangement of "Dixie" is mournful.
(Around the Stix household, we refer to Selznick as "Zero," because the "O" in his name refers to nothing. Selznick thought that having a middle name, or at least appearing to, would make a more favorable impression on people than just having a first and a last name. In a fascinating coincidence, Selznick's future father-in-law, Louis B. Mayer, thought the same exact thing. Thus, the "B" in Mayer's name also stood for nothing!)

Max Steiner's lovely melody for GWTW was used as the theme song for "Million Dollar Movie" on WOR-TV's Channel 9 in the 1950s, which ran the same film for an entire week. If you missed a show one night, you could see it the next.
