I think there's something to this. Yes, it would have happened anyway, but Clancy was much loved in the military and civilian defense contracting community (and to a lesser extent the CIA). He was the anti-le Carre for Republicans, he had heroes and villains - and his plots felt deeply real. Part 1:

Backin the early 1970's the book "Curve of the Binding Energy" was written. John McPhee toured the recently open World Trade Center with this one Los Alamos scientist who perfected the fissionable a-bombs. McPhee wanted to know if terrorists could bring the towers down with an a-bomb. The scientist said explode a crude device in a manner so that one tower would topple onto the other and knock it down. People did have these thoughts.
