Light amid the Darkening Scene? "Capitalist Havens of Free Speech"

AOF: This largely encouraging article is by the Manhattan Institute's veteran analyst Steve Malanga:

Steven Malanga is the senior editor of City Journal and the George M. Yeager Fellow at the Manhattan Institute.

I've highlighted one sentence below.

N.S.: This article reminds me of a long new york times essay on "the intellectual dark web" by Bari Weiss from a few years ago, and that's not a good thing.

Weiss spoke of people like Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro as being the stars of that radical world. The essay appeared to be a diversion tactic, in order to channel people's energies into harmless directions, the sort of thing the GOP and its media had been doing for 30 years.

"Part of what has emerged is a more sophisticated form of self-publishing. Self-publishing is nothing new, of course, and was sometimes derided as the vanity press"

They used to have self publishing in the old Soviet Union. Called it samizdat. Had to be careful what you say. Just as in the USA today. Congratulations Americans.
