On an undated "Tonight Show",that played tonight in honor of Tim Conway,Johnny Carson had a segment where he read "States Humor"--jokes like this:
"What's the difference between a parrot and a woman from Nevada?
You can teach a parrot to say--NO."
That led to a letter from Nevada governor Richard Bryan,who complained "that this joke was comparable to a racial joke--and was unbecoming a show like this."
To which Carson commented,"I am going use this letter to start a new segment on our show called,'Lighten Up'."
He walked to a lecturn and proceeded to roast Nevada for 5 minutes:"Why is it,that the only state the government chose to test its nuclear bombs in,is--Nevada!"
"Did you know that only purpose of creating Nevada was to separate California and Colorado?No other reason."
Carson(way ahead of his time) then told Governor Bryan to "lighten up" --a point of view we could sorely use right now in massive quantities.
The first anti-PC skit I remember seeing.
Conway,who passed away today,came out after the skit and gave kudos to Carson for the idea of "not taking everything seriously."
Another top white entertainer leaves us.
