Meet a new Welsh "health ambassador"
And the public reaction? Welsh media outlets online clutch their pearls in horror at how this is viewed by readers. The CYMRU news service writes:
Many of the posts are inflammatory and racist with far-right political commentator Katie Hopkins adding to the abuse online. In a video on social media, where she questioned Ahmed's nationhood, she derided her further by saying she "looks like my hamster when faced with a bag of peanuts in an impending famine.
"Cheeks so big they're squished up so her eyes can't open. About as healthy as cancer."
A separate anonymous account posted a checklist claiming she was chosen for diversity, and because she was "a certain religion".
One comment on that post read: "There are times to be grateful for the burqa!"
While another added: "Was part of her training eating the previous ambassador?"
She is seen on X receiving a Mastering Diversity Degree, whatever that is. (Although some commenters have produced fake AI videos parodying her, I guess that this photo is genuine.)
Athika Ahmed has been described variously as a dietician, a Cardiff medical student, and a former "asylum seeker" from Pakistan. Her politics are predictably left-wing. Allen Hampton of Threadreader notes her support of Hamas and hatred of Israel, so that on the very day after the October 7, 2023 massacre, she wrote, "I don't understand how anyone can support Israel right now."
She is also a supporter of illegal immigration to the UK.
