“Charles Broomfield now faces three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony in the deaths of Jacqueline Neill and her sons, 13-year-old Michael Kilpatrick and 15-year-old Cameron Kilpatrick, Kent county prosecutor Chris Becker announced wednesday.

“online records show Broomfield, 44, was booked into the Kent county jail Tuesday. it’s not yet known when he will go before a judge for arraignment, but it could be as early as thursday. if convicted of first-degree murder, he’ll spend the rest of his life in prison. “I appreciate the work of the grand rapids police department to quickly and thoroughly conduct an investigation into this horrible event to allow these charges to be filed, Becker said in a statement.

“in a statement released to news 8 wednesday afternoon, family identified the victims as Neill and her sons, calling the killings 'a senseless act of violence that has left our family utterly devastated.

“there are no words to adequately describe the heartbreak we feel over losing multiple family members,' the statement continues. 'we appreciate the outpouring of love from the greater grand rapids community during our darkest hour.

“grpd previously said investigators were speaking with a person of interest, though a spokesperson for the agency did not reply to a tuesday message asking whether that person was in police custody.

“Neill, Michael and Cameron were found dead in a home on Worden street se near kalamazoo avenue around 7:40 a.m. tuesday. a source close to the investigation said the boys were shot in their beds.

“also in the home but unharmed was a 5-year-old boy — Neill and Broomfield’s son, the source said.
