"back in the 1970s... doctors weren't even aggressively screening for cholesterol... because it wasn't the villain yet."

My personal physician attempted to prescribe statins for me.
I refused.
Levels of "high cholesterol" have been reduced over the years thereby allowing an entry for pushing statins on patients.
I swim thousands of yards weekly.
Last thing on my mind is "high cholesterol."
Lots of contemporary sciences (medicine) is complete horseshit.
Doctors and Big Pharma push prescription drugs because it is an annuity model.

A lot of debate about cholesterol. How bad is it--and at what level? Doctors and researchers don't have enough info to make claims about lipitor, imho.

I had some correspondence with a doctor who had been head of cardiac surgery at a major teaching hospital. He said that over years of doing bypass operations he never saw a relationship between cholesterol level and need for a bypass. Many bypass patients have so called "normal" cholesterol levels while there are people with incredibly high cholesterol who had NO heart disease. Like the Covid "Jax" (note this stupid software changes what I wrote to Jax), statins are a money-making scam. I have seen meta analyses which show that the only people helped by statins are middle-aged men who have already had a heart attack. Women are not helped--cancer rate increases. Older people with higher cholesterol have LOWER mortality rates than those with low cholesterol. When I told my doctor that statins only help less then 1 percent of patients, he responded, "Yes, you have to treat everyone." Would he prescribe an antibiotic that only helped less than one percent of those taking it????
