About the victims: the post notes that Maria Pleitez, the deceased mother of little Dayanara Cortes, was from el salvador, her immigration status unmentioned. She had been in the U.S. for twenty-four years and was described as "the head of the family," with nothing said about the father--or fathers?--of her children. A go fund me page in spanish announced the intention of having the bodies of mother and child returned to el salvador for burial.

The site of the fatal car crash, lakewood, nj caught my eye. My grandparents had a summer home with a spacious backyard there which my family visited often in the 1950s. I remember the elderly (to my eyes) Jewish sisters from Europe who lived next door on Third Street; the candy store two or three blocks away, where I bought my Kay Tracey mysteries; the Strand theater, where we saw movies in the evening, and the drugstore adjoining it which featured ice cream cones at the fountain and a great pinball machine. Outside the city we would drive to a nearby miniature golf course to play or go to the Lakewood Deer Farm, which allowed visitors to feed the tame deer.

This crime by a drunken alien seems to defile the place of my many childhood memories.
