CHICAGO (WLS) -- Five people were shot outside a senior living building on the city's South Side on Monday afternoon, Chicago police said.
Police said officers responded to a call about a shooting in the Bronzeville neighborhood's 700-block of East 43rd Street just before 3:30 p.m.
Two people who did not want to appear on camera told ABC7 they heard upwards of 12 gunshots ring out across the street from the Dr. Martin Luther King Community Center and Judge Slater Apartments, which is a senior residence.
Another woman said she stopped in her ducked down for cover.
Police said a woman of an unknown age, shot in the leg, was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.
A 72-year-old woman, shot in the shoulder, was taken to the same hospital in good condition.
Three men, a 35-year-old shot in the arm, a 44-year-old shot in the foot, and a 39-year-old in the arm, were taken to the same hospital in good condition.
What led up to the shooting was not immediately clear.
Police quickly expanded their perimeter of the crime scene, blocking off the intersection of 43rd and Cottage Grove. Dozens of shell casings were on the ground as investigators canvassed the area.
No one is in custody, and Area One detectives are investigating.

Trump told reporters that he is officially invoking the D.C. Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control and deploy the National Guard, stating, "This is Liberation Day in D.C. — and we're going to take our capital BACK."
Earlier, President Trump fired off a Truth Social post around 8:00 a.m. ET: "Washington, D.C. will be LIBERATED today! Crime, savagery, filth, and scum will DISAPPEAR. I will MAKE OUR CAPITAL GREAT AGAIN!"
"The days of ruthlessly killing or hurting innocent people are OVER! I quickly fixed the border (ZERO ILLEGALS in the last 3 months!), and D.C. is next!!!" the president said.
Trump's Truth Social post was followed by a report from The Wall Street Journal, which cited a U.S. official saying the White House was preparing to activate hundreds of National Guard troops across the metro area, pending a final order.
Earlier this year, the president signed an executive order establishing the "D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force," calling for increased law enforcement presence in public areas and launching initiatives to beautify parks and other public spaces.

So the President snapped his fingers and presto, an instant police force for DC. How wonderful. I can hardly wait for Monday morning and the first wave of rosy statistics. Then what happens next? As you said, "10,000 moving vans". Are they there? Fossil-fueled, I trust. With prosecutors and judges and jails waiting, 7 days a week express service?
Or the same corrupt and lazy back end? Low/No Bail, trials that won't happen until 2026, and released back on the streets in time to inflate the arrest stats even more. I suggest some Sheriff Arpaio Tent City Jails, plural. "Climate Change Alcatraz", if you will, for summer heat heat now and a frigid winter to come. WASHINGTON (AP) — Some of the 800 National Guard members deployed by President Donald Trump began arriving in the nation’s capital on Tuesday, ramping up after the White House ordered federal forces to take over the city’s police department and reduce crime in what the president called — without substantiation — a lawless city.
The influx came the morning after Trump announced he would be activating the guard members and taking over the department. He cited a crime emergency — but referred to the same crime that city officials stress is already falling noticeably. The president holds the legal right to make such moves — to a point.
Still unclear as the week unfolds: how visible and aggressive the federal presence in Washington would be, how it could play out, who will be targeted — and how long it might last.
On Monday, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said Trump’s freshly announced plan to take over the Metropolitan Police Department and call in the National Guard was not a productive step. She calmly laid out the city’s case that crime has been dropping steadily and said Trump’s perceived state of emergency simply doesn’t match the numbers.
She also flatly stated that the capital city’s hands are tied and that her administration has little choice but to comply. “We could contest that,” she said of Trump’s definition of a crime emergency, “but his authority is pretty broad.”

Trump on Monday placed Washington's police department under federal control and deployed the National Guard to "help reestablish law, order and public safety."
He suggested that other major cities – like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles – could also see federal involvement in public safety.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner was joined by faith leaders on Tuesday to discuss "President Donald Trump's recent threat to send members of the National Guard to Washington, D.C. and other American cities."

Krasner, a Democrat, has publicly rebuked the Trump administration during his tenure as the top prosecutor in Pennsylvania's largest city. He has vowed to "reaffirm the city's commitment to uphold the Constitutional rights of residents and to hold accountable anyone who violates the law."
"I just never thought that the preservation of the government of the United States would be an issue that I would have to face," said Krasner, who called Trump's suspected use of the National Guard a "military invasion of America's big cities."

(Breitbart)MSNBC political commentator Al Sharpton said Tuesday on “Chris Jansing Reports” that President Donald Trump taking federal control of the police department in Washington, D.C. and calling out crime in other majority black cities is “race-baiting.”
Sharpton said, “The data says that crime and violent crime has gone down in Washington, he’s going to send out the National Guard. Well, why didn’t he send it out January 6? So, this is clear politics. It’s aimed at black mayors.”
He continued, “There are many cities in between Washington and Chicago, Washington and Oakland. He only chose the black ones. So, it is clear what he’s trying to do: he’s trying to race-bait. His own base is very concerned about Epstein. So what do you do? You go throw your base red meat. Let’s go back into race, all the blacks are breaking crime, breaking the law, we need to go in. It’s race-baiting. I think that what he has done is disgraceful, and it puts people under siege unnecessarily.”
Sharpton added, “It’s a misuse of law enforcement people. Yes, where there’s crime, we need to support those criminals being subject to the law. The majority of the people in Washington are black, their victims are black. We’re not making excuses for criminals, but he did on January 6. And why should we trust his judgment when the data shows different?”
