Old friend of mine – sadly died, two years ago, natural causes – was in hot pursuit of a woman despite the kindest warnings of his friends and adult children. Where did you find her, anyway? On a Christian dating site, he said.

Eventually he convinced her to marry him (his third marriage, her first or second).

I was convinced for a long time that someday news would come that his body was found somewhere by a roadside in the north woods.

The marriage lasted but a few months. The divorce was entirely her doing, with little or no lawyer services involved. There was also an abortion in there somewhere, also entirely her choice.

Why? Why did you persist?, I asked.

“Well, she does have a screw loose,” he explained. “But I kinda like that in a woman.”
