"suspect charged on monday

"concord — nearly 24 years to the day after a local resident was sexually assaulted [read: raped!] as she slept in her home, a suspect has been arrested and charged, authorities announced monday.

"Michael Lamonte Evans, a los angeles county resident, was charged monday with forcible rape and rape of an unconscious person, both felonies, in connection with the dec. 9, 2000 attack on a woman. the victim was paralyzed from the neck down and unable to fight back against her attacker, who struck in the early morning hours while she was asleep in bed.

"'Evans, 49, was arrested in late october for allegedly violating his parole in los angeles. he has numerous arrests, including an indecent exposure conviction that required him to register as a sex offender, and occurred after the rape, authorities said.
"'the victim has since passed away, but she reported the incident to police at the time. investigators preserved dna evidence from a rape test kit that was linked to Evans, authorities said.

"authorities say that, in addition to the dna, they pursued further investigative techniques — but haven't yet revealed what kind — that led to criminal charges being filed against Evans on monday.
"Evans remains in custody at a los angeles county jail facility. he will be extradited to the bay area soon, but his first court appearance has not yet been set, records show. when he does show up in contra costa, he is tentatively scheduled to appear before judge Patricia Scanlon, records show."
No photo of the perp, naturally.  No coverage in the national media, either--only local reports.
Wasn't there anyone else living in the house with this paralyzed woman? Obviously she required 24-hour care, so why didn't the caregiver scare off the rapist?
N.S.: Those are very good questions, which hadn't occurred to me. The vic's caregiver had to be goofing off, and/or an accessory to the crime.
