We all have the right to criticize our elected officials. But apparently not all elected officials agree. That's why FIRE is suing the mayor of Eastpointe, Michigan, for repeatedly shouting down her own constituents during the public-comment portion of a city council meeting. The mayor berated Mary Hall-Rayford and three other Eastpointers for daring to criticize her decisions. VIDEO: See the free speech fiasco unfold as the meeting careens off the rails and directly into a FIRE lawsuit. "I love Eastpointe. Eastpointe is my home," said Mary. "But every resident should have the freedom to express their thoughts about what happens in their community. Mayor Owens may not want to hear our feedback, but we have the right to speak up. Change doesn't happen when people sit quietly." We won't sit quietly either. We're defending Mary's First Amendment right to speak her mind — and every citizen's right to criticize the government.
