I thought indigenous people’s day was for the “indigenous”?

Unless you have an account, you will have to sign up to see the NextDoor page but here is the text in question:
“Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Nearly 140,000 Oregonians are indigenous people from Central America and Mexico. Oregon is also home to nine Confederated Tribes. October 10, is a time to reflect on their history, recognize the past tragedies that continue to affect them, and appreciate the many contributions made to our community.”
Waitasecond...140K are mex (and others) “indigenous”? I thought indigenous meant you are the original people in the area you live in. How do mex migrate to the us and still retain their indigenous status in a place they have no ancestral roots? Maybe somebody will say they are also from the north American continent, O.K., but many of them are from south America, which is a whole other continent. So how far does this extend? Some bantu tribesman or afghani sheepherder can come over here, say he's "indigenous" then qualify for benefits that were supposed to be for actual native Americans?
On behalf of my native American ancestry, I say f*#@ that (pardon my french).

I propose changing just a couple letters of "indigenous" to make an even better sounding day.
Indignant Day--where Whites show their anger at having Christopher Columbus lose his standing in American history.
Put bumper stickers on your car, blow your horn and fly the flag to announce your displeasure with this crock, known as,"indigenous day".

Like Crazy Horse said when asked where was his land! "My land is where my ancestors are buried." Good enough for me. And as to where my ancestors are buried. Well, here too. Same as Crazy. And who could possibly question Crazy.
