GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The man who was shot and killed by a Grand Rapids police officer Monday has been identified as Patrick Lyoya, 26.
Family released his name to news 8 on Tuesday. He was originally from the democratic republic of the congo and came to the United States seven years ago.
“The astonishing thing is my son was not killed by a criminal, but my son was killed by a police officer,” his father, Peter Lyoya, said using an interpreter. “The one that was supposed to be protecting them, watching over them, taking care of them, that is the person who killed my son.”
[N.S.: That sounds like a lawyer-written script. A shyster had to somehow be involved in that “interview.”]
He said police are not allowing him to see his son’s body.
Why grpd officers are given 72 hours before questioning in deadly force cases
Police Chief Eric Winstrom met with Patrick Lyoya’s family on Tuesday, grpd said. His father said he wants answers [read: money], but said he did not get any during the meeting.
Around 8:10 a.m. Monday, a grpd officer pulled Patrick Lyoya over near Nelson Avenue SE and Griggs Street SE. Police say he fled but was apprehended by the officer.
He struggled with the officer and after a “lengthy fight” the officer shot and killed him, Winstrom said on Monday.
The officer’s name has not been released.

“We’re looking for the reason, the cause, why Patrick was killed today. We want to know, ‘why?’ … I’m mourning. I’m crying. I’m deeply hurt to see that I lost my first born at the age of 26. I never dreamed that one day I would be the one burying my son,” he said.

He said Grand Rapids police would not show him any video from the officer’s body-worn camera nor share details about what led up to the shooting.
Peter Lyoya also told News 8 the passenger who was with his son recorded video on his phone, but Grand Rapids police confiscated it.
“What is so hurting me, what is so astonishing, I don’t even know where the body of my son is,” Peter Lyoya told News 8 through a translator. “When we try to do investigation to find out where Patrick is, they cannot allow me to go see my son’s body.”
The family was assisted throughout the day by Kent County Commissioner Robert S. Womack(black) who said he plans to address policies and red tape that prevent families from obtaining even basic information.
“My heart really goes out to the father and mother and family because this is just too painful for any family to go through, especially being denied some of the basic rights like to see their son,” said Womack, who noted the Lyoya family is asking for the community to remain peaceful. “The family does not want violence tied to their son’s name, but they do want a thorough investigation and they want justice if their son’s life was taken without cause.”(GRA:Justice=riots).
Womack urged residents to withhold judgment until the investigation is completed.
“It’s still under investigation,” said Womack. “All of us think we know more than we really know, but it’s going to be best for us to see this investigation all the way out.”
Patrick Lyoya’s father said he was not aware of his son having any prior interactions with police.
Michigan State Police records show the young man had three arrests related to stolen vehicles and pleaded guilty to misdemeanors in each case.

The records also show four traffic-related offenses, including convictions for operating while intoxicated and driving on a suspended license.
His father told News 8 Patrick Lyoya would often make the trip to Lansing where the rest of the family lives.
“He was a sharing person. He helped his family. If he had money, he would share with them,” Peter Lyoya said through an interpreter.
He also said he believes his son was killed because of the color of his skin.

“I’m talking to my fellow African Americans just to be very careful because we are being killed. Just be very careful when you are out there because it seems like your life doesn’t have any meaning,” he said.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The family of Patrick Lyoya, who was shot and killed by a Grand Rapids police officer this week, is demanding video that shows what happened be released right away.
“(Lyoya’s father) Peter wants the video out and Peter wants justice,” Siku said. “He wants people to know the truth. As a father, Peter don’t want to see this happen another parent to go through.”
Patrick Lyoya, 26, was shot and killed Monday morning. Police say he tried to run away from a traffic stop and engaged in a “lengthy fight” with the officer. The officer, whose name has not been released, ultimately shot and killed him.
The chief of the Grand Rapids Police Department said that he wanted to release the video next week, but the Kent County prosecutor on Thursday morning asked that no police agencies release it until the investigation is complete. It remains unclear exactly when that video will be made public.
Prosecutor asks for GRPD shooting video not to be released
“What happened to his son was so horrible and I can guarantee this that as a parent, I would never want to see something like that happen to any kid,” Siku told News 8 Thursday.
He said MSP walked Lyoya’s father through what happened from start to finish.
“I ask a question. I say, ‘How was he killed?’ And she said, ‘He was shot in the head,'” Siku said.
He said Peter Lyoya then asked to see the video.
“The father insisted (on seeing the video) and said, ‘I would like to see how my son has been killed,'” Siku said.
Because the video has not been made public, News 8 has not seen it and therefore cannot independently confirm the interpreter’s description of what it shows.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Hundreds of demonstrators gathered Saturday afternoon to call for justice for Patrick Lyoya, who was killed by a Grand Rapids police officer early this week.
The group met outside Amplify GR, a community growth organization, on Kalamazoo Avenue SE around 3 p.m.
They carried posters of Patrick and signs that read “Say his name: Patrick Lyoya.”
The group called for justice as they chanted, “Black Lives Matter.” They were calling for a revolution, saying that GRPD is “not the solution.”
Demonstrators marched from Boston Square to the Grand Rapids Center for Community Transformation, where a candlelight vigil was held before 6 p.m.
Lyoya’s mother and father stood at the front and center of the peaceful protest. His mother carried a picture of her late son and cried out his name.
“Where I came from, I have seen people being killed. I never witnessed like how my son was killed. The way that the police assassinate my son,” Patrick’s father, Peter Lyoya said through an interpreter.
He made it clear that he wanted the protest to remain peaceful. He’s watched the video showing his son’s death, and he wants the world to see it too.
When protestors reached the Grand Rapids Center for Community Transformation, Lyoya’s brother said “I still can’t believe what happened. I don’t think I’m ever going to believe what happened.”
Peter Lyoya said his sons haven’t been able to eat or sleep since losing their brother on Monday.
Kent County Commissioner(black,pimp hat on)Robert S. Womack led a chant calling for the video to be released to the public. “Show the video! We want the world to know! Patrick!” he chanted.
GRA:If the video shows what Lyoya says it does,we will see some violence,in all likelihood.Whatever Lyoya did to the cop is unimportant to blacks and commies.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Civil rights attorney Ben Crump joined community leaders for a Sunday afternoon forum on the death of Patrick Lyoya, who was shot and killed by a Grand Rapids police officer on April 4.
The civil rights attorney is representing Lyoya’s family. Crump, who has been dubbed “black America’s Attorney General,” also represented the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Michael Brown and others.
After leading the crowd in a chant, saying “justice for Patrick,” Crump invited Lyoya’s family to join him up front.
Crump pushed for the release of the bodycam video, which Grand Rapids Police Department Chief Eric Winstrom has promised to release next week.
“We have to have that video released, no matter how painful that is, because there’s a mistrust in the community,” he said. “The only way you can deal with that bridge of mistrust is to have transparency.”
In his first visit to Grand Rapids since taking on the case, Crump laid out his plans.
“The family hired me to make sure this matter is not swept under the rug,” he said after the forum. He said once the video is released, “Then we pray for due process. We want nothing but equal justice, that’s all we’ve ever wanted.”

CROWDS GATHER IN DOWNTOWN GRAND RAPIDS AFTER RELEASE OF VIDEOS.
GRA:I watched the censored videos of the incident from January 4th,when an unidentified GR cop stopped Patrick Layoya,a black immigrant,because of fake plates.Uncut video is supposed to be on Youtube,but I don't see it yet.
From what I viewed--and was indicated,Layoya would not listen to commands to get in his car,the two battled over the officer's taser.The shooting was not shown on TV.
A group called "People for the Revolution" are in downtown GR,telling media that they demand the officer's immediate arrest.
Where this heads after dark is the question,but I've learned never to underestimate the black's aptitude for using situations such as this one to cause havoc(robbery,arson,breaking and entering etc.)
As I said before,because Layoya is not a homegrown black,there may not be the violence normally seen with these events.Itvalzo wouldn't surprise me if there was a night of rioting.
There's also heavy rain predicted for after 8pm.

RIOT POSTPONED DUE TO HEAVY RAIN AND WIND.
GRA:They attempted to go to the recently fortified police station,but nasty weather moved in and the umpires called off the riot.It's been rescheduled for a future date--which was not announced.
