Moonstruck Oscar-Winner Olympia Dukakis Dead at 89
N.S.: Dukakis was very good in Moonstruck, but Joan Chen was much better in The Last Emperor, and wasn't even nominated. (Oddly enough, no performer was from that masterpiece, which still managed to win nine Oscars.)

Any coincidence she became famous when her cousin was running for president during the late 80s?
As N.S. said, she was "very good" in 1987's "Moonstruck",but I wonder why did she suddenly appear out of nowhere, after two decades of journeyman work in TV(and a couple movies, years earlier)to receive the breakthrough role of Rose Castorini?
Michael Dukakis was ramping up politically, during this timeframe, for his 1988 POTUS bid--as a Democrat--against George H.W.Bush.Previous to 1987,Olympia Dukakis' career was basically theater, from what I've read--why then, her sudden choice for "Moonstruck"?Why was she brought out of the morass of obscurity,JUST as the Michael Dukakis machine got rolling?
The answer,in this case,is in the question,I believe.Hollywood hooked up with a potential ally--and the rest,as they say,is history.
She went on to a flurry of niche movie roles and a fine career, but it certainly didn't hurt to have a relative--possibly making a few calls--to help her along at the right time.
