Maybe it's that invisible (negro) man James Baldwin wrote about.
Amazing how witnesses are so observant they get all those clothing details down, but then can't identify a suspects race.
The assumption--it IS a negro.If it's Whitey,they'd say so.So a negro in this attire or that.
