Kidnapping an armed cop is never a bright idea. A case of "terminal" stupidity and an outstanding example of properly applied animal control.
If you can't do the time (eternity), then don't do the crime.
One less career criminal.

A cop kidnapped has to fight no matter what the circumstances. The bad guy has demonstrated an intent to kill you. Like in the "Onion Fields".
It was his best one ever.

Do not understand the whole scenario there - the cops should have used their vehicle(s) to block his (apparently stolen) in so he could not leave - then knock on the window announcing "POLICE", and tell him to get out - then stand back and wait for him to get out - he has nowhere to go.
These cops will have questions to answer - if one or more of them face charges I will not be surprised.
Most cops are at best midwits, and like all midwits will occasionally do dumb things - this looks like an example.
