My Aunt Marie is from Grundy, Virginia.
Her father was a coal miner in Grundy.
He was killed by an out-of-control coal car from a mine.
Decades ago, miners used to dump the waste rock from mines down the sides of mountains. The rail that ran out of the mine mouth would stop at the edge of a cliff. Then the coal car would be tipped, and the waste rock would sluice down the cliff.
With my aunt's father, the coal car did not stop at the cliff's edge. Instead, it hit him and swept him to his death. He was the one tasked with tipping the waste rock out of the coal cars.
As for Grundy, it got destroyed so many times by flash floods that the Corps of Engineers relocated it to the other side of the river in the town.
