Dear New Yorkers,

Chirlane McCray has played an unprecedented prominent role in city government as the spouse of a New York mayor.

She spearheads ThriveNYC, a billion-dollar endeavor to improve the city's mental health services. She accompanied Mayor de Blasio on the presidential campaign trail, with her NYPD protective detail paid for by taxpayers. She's said she's mulling a run for Brooklyn borough president.

Now we've learned, through records and sources, that McCray is employing a shadow staff of at least six full-time workers who don't appear on her official roster — with their salaries paid by other city agencies or their roles obscured within the wider office of her husband.

That brings her staff to 14 people as de Blasio is talking about laying off up to 22,000 workers amid a pandemic-induced budget crisis.

More here on what McCray's staff does — and what they're costing New Yorkers.

Some other items of note:
THE KICKER: "It's an American right to have pepperoni on pizza." — Matthew Hyland, chef and co-owner of the Emily pizza restaurants. Production problems at meat plants and a rise in demand for pizza, both a result of the pandemic, have driven up pepperoni prices. (Via Bloomberg

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Tuesday.
