MB said...: A most excellent description, "chameleon". And a perfectly apt endorsement for the stupid party, a man so good at his profession in his day, now seemingly asking for assistance crossing the street. I could have appreciated his endorsement in 1964, but not in 2012.

Sergio Leone wanted Henry Fonda but couldn't afford a major Hollywood star. The first actor offered the part was James Coburn, then Charles Bronson. Coburn was, I believe, not available and Bronson thought the script was bad. Rory Calhoun and Ty Hardin were sought, and by some accounts, Audie Murphy.

Eastwood was finally offered the role. He was the bargain basement choice.

Eastwood was called a fascist when he played Dirty Harry. He's been working to live that down for over 30 years now.
